A lot of euphoria last week when word came that United Water announced plans to build a new water distribution plant on Iron Dale Road in Bloomsburg. The downside a possible 20% rate increase... across the state... for United Water customers. That word from United's Operations Director Bill Kelvington. Once permits are obtained from the state department of environmental protection... and other governmental entities... ground will be broken near the current Irondale Inn... a short distance away from the current water plant... always the target to flooding from Fishing Creek. The $20 – million plant is expected to be on line during the second half of 2015.
A Berwick woman who wandered away from her home at the start of the weekend is now back with family. 71 – year old Judith Patterson was reported missing Saturday... but was found by police midday Sunday near the banks of the Susquehanna Fiver near Decker's Scrap Yard. It's believed she wandered away from her home Friday night and had been undergoing testing for dementia.
The six candidates seeking the three Bloomsburg Town Council are all expected to appear at a candidates forum tonight at the Bloomsburg Fire Hall. The event is being produced by the League of Voters... and the League's Zabrina Finn says it's an opportunity to ask the candidates some very important questions. The forum gets underway at 7 O'clock in the fire department's social room in the 900 – hundred block of Market Street.
Maybe you've seen it already... a mural honoring Danville's importance as an early center of the iron industry in the United States. Now... downtown Danville’s newest mural will be dedicated this coming Sunday. The mural is hard to miss... it's painted on the side of the building at Mill Street and Route 11. Delivering remarks will be Jim Wilson of the Danville Business Alliance... and Artist Jo Pennypacker.
The ceremonies begin at 2 O'clock Sunday afternoon.
Police in Hanover Township... near Wilkes – Barre... are trying to determine the identity of a man found floating in the Susquehanna River early Sunday morning. Authorities believe the man is anywhere from 30 to 50 years old. The remains were found near the Breslau boat ramp which is a popular fishing spot.
Rt. 93 Crashes
PennDOT says it is looking at ways to reduce the number of crashes along Route 93 in Packer Township... in Carbon County... south of Hazleton. Two fatal crashes have taken place there over the past three years... and there continues to be numerous crashes between Hudson Drive and the top of Spring Mountain. Most of the accidents taking place during heavy rainstorms.
The Berwick Area Community Watch Group is trying to raise awareness of their efforts. They plan to walk most of the length of Mulberry and Vine Street starting at Third Wednesday night. The group is efforting to spruce up the neighborhood bounded by Third and 9th Street.
For the third time this season, Bloomsburg University's senior running back Franklyn Quiteh is the PSAC Eastern Division offensive player of the week. Quiteh earned the honor with a school record 304 rushing yards and four touchdowns in a 52-38 win at East Stroudsburg Saturday afternoon. Quiteh's longest run of the game came in third quarter. Huskies junior linebacker Justin Shirk shared defensive player of the week honors. Shirk had 13 tackles including two sacks in helping the Huskies remain unbeaten. Next up is a game against Cheyney Saturday at Danny Hale Field in Redman Stadium.
In the NFL Sunday.... the Philadelphia Eagles lost to the Dallas Cowboys 17-3... the New York Jets defeated the New England Patriots 30-27 in overtime... and the Pittsburgh Steelers downed the Baltimore Ravens 19-16.
In Monday night's game, the New York Giants are at home against the Minnesota Vikings.
