Bloomsburg Zoning Meeting
On a unanimous vote Thursday night... Bloomsburg's zoning hearing board said “no” to a request to re-zone part of the 10th Street Plaza... turning 2,400 square feet of the 13,000 square foot building into student housing. The request was made by building owner Richard Angelo. He went on to say he has trouble renting his building at the corner of 10th and Iron Streets. The proposal did not sit well with neighbors who were dead set against the idea. Angelo has thirty days to appeal the zoning board's decision in court.
There will be another in a series of fund raisers Saturday... the proceeds going to the re-construction of Kidsburg 2.0 Bloomsburg's Town Park. The event is called “Whack – a – Knight” for Kidsburg... designed to show us the Medieval and Renaissance eras with combat demonstrations... basket weaving and food sampling.
The Columbia – Montour Office of Aging is holding it's 13th annual senior expo next Tuesday at the Espy Fire Hall. Agency director Kathy Lynn says it's the perfect opportunity to get your free flu shot. If you want to take advantage of getting a flu shot... give the office of aging on Sawmill Road a call. The expo gets underway at 9 O'clock Tuesday and runs through early afternoon.
United Water to Construct Plant
Within the next two years... a new water plant for the Bloomsburg area should be on – line. United Water late Wednesday afternoon unveiling plans for a new $20 – million dollar plus water treatment plant adjacent to their current Irondale Road facility. It will be located on a three acre tract of land where the Irondale Inn currently sits... and will be above the 100 – year flood plain. Utility project manager Nancy Trushell says she hopes state environmental approval comes quickly. The current United Water pump station has been knocked off line during the floods of 2006 and 2011... leaving Bloomsburg high and dry. The new plant is expected to be on line the second half of 2015. In addition... subscribers to United Water can expect to see an increase in their water rates.
Bloomsburg Parking Survey
A group of Bloomsburg University students will try and put an end to the debate about parking in downtown Bloomsburg. Geography and Geoscience students are armed with GPS devices and clipboards... watching the ebb and flow of traffic... then surveying business owners and residents to determine parking issues... so says associate professor Jeff Brunskill. The raw data from the survey should be be out by the second week in November... with analytical stats compiled over the winter... with refined data given to the town during the University's spring semester.
You'll have an opportunity this coming Monday to quiz the six candidates seeking the three open seats for Bloomsburg Town Council. The candidates forum at the Bloomsburg Fire Hall is sponsored by the League of Voters. Zabrina Finn says it's a great opportunity to see the candidates in action... not just one dimensional such as you hear on the radio or read about in the printed media. The forum begins at 7 O'clock Monday night at the Bloomsburg Fire Hall in the 900 block of Market Street.
Millville Road Work
Motorists in the Millville area will have to build some time into their trip if you go through the village starting Thursday. PennDOT says a crew will mill and pave sections of Route 42 within 500 feet in each direction of the intersection with the flashing traffic signal. Parking in the area will not be allowed. The agency's Rick Mason says there will be flaggers controlling traffic... and no official detour is planned.
Luzerne County district attorney has ruled that the shooting death of a Hazleton man by police was justified. DA Stefanie Salavantis says the shooting of 26 – year old Jonathan Garay at his Alter Street home on October 5th after interviews suggest Garay was pointing a loaded weapon at officers. The report also said that Garay had four times the legal limit of alcohol in his system when the incident went down.
The three people who live in a Wilkes – Barre home where a two month old baby was found... and later died... are circling the wagons. Our media partner Newswatch 16 is reporting the trio have applied for public defenders. Little Antonio Evan was found bruises all over his body Sunday morning. Despite the request for attorneys... Wilkes – Barre police have yet to file charges.
Sex Assault Charge
A Mountain Top man is in trouble with the law... again. 38 – year old Salvatore Argo surrendered to police... and is charged with allegedly sexually assaulting a woman last August.... a woman he met on a dating website. Back in 2010... Argo was found guilty of selling counterfeit sports items.
