A 22 – year old Bloomsburg woman got caught up in a six vehicle accident in the eastbound lane of Interstate 80... east of Mifflinville Thursday. The crash causing an eight mile backup. State police say Allison Nauman's car was extensively damaged when it was rammed by an out of control tractor – trailer driven by a Brooklyn man near Tank... in Luzerne County. Ms. Nauman was slightly injured, but didn't require a trip to the hospital. Police ticketing the trucker for speeding, The eastbound lane was clogged with debris and vehicles... causing the backup... shutting down the eastbound lane for hours.
If you've used the bridge on Perry Avenue... linking Hemlock and Montour Townships... and spanning Hemlock Creek near Fernville... you've probably noticed the weight limit of 40 tons has been reduced to vehicles 36 tons or less. The reason... according to PennDOT's Rick Mason... it's an aging structure and it won't been fixed or replaced thanks to inaction by the state legislature on a 2 – and – a – half billion dollars transportation bill. Meantime... the state house is expected to take up Senate Bill 1 within the not too distant future.
A former long – time employee of the Diocese of Scranton is now facing charges of allegedly stealing an estimated $340,000 in donations meant for the poor. Sharon Warunek of Scranton worked for the Diocese for more than 30 – years.. in charge of charitable donations. Now Lackawanna County investigators says she took the money to pay her credit cards over the past seven years. The discovery of the theft came as the Diocese was making a change in the oversight of it's financial accounts.
Thousands of extra people are expected to be in town next weekend to take part in Bloomsburg University's annual homecoming activities. In addition to various sporting events... including a football game between the Huskies and Millersville at Redman Stadium... and an alumni tent party... there will be a homecoming parade going west on Main and south on Market Streets.... so says BU's Bonnie Martin. The parade forms next Saturday morning at the Geisinger – Bloomsburg Hospital parking lot... and steps off at 11 AM.
A new report raises some questions about a key provision in a pension reform plan proposed by a state representative this week. The plan calls for a hybrid cash balance pension system for new hires. Dr. Stephen Herzenberg of the Keystone Research Center, says they have taken a closer look at cash balance plans. Herzenberg says the plan could make it harder to retain teachers, police officers, nurses and others in public service.
Vita – Line
Work has returned to normal for the overnight crew at the Vita – Line plant in the Humboldt Industrial Park near Hazleton. Early Thursday morning... flames broke out when a machine caught fire. The building was evacuated. Vita – Line produces dry cat and dog food.
Wilkes – Barre police still searching for a suspect wanted in connection with the robbery of a cabbie... and now the owner of Brugit's City Taxi is offering a one – thousand dollar reward. Authorities say the cabbie picked up a fare at the Sherman Hills housing complex... was relieved of several hundred dollars in cash... then the man shooting out the rear window of the cab. The driver was shaken... but not hurt.
Still on the loose... a suspect wanted in connection of the robbery of a Wilkes – Barre Turkey Hill store at the corner of South Main and Blackman Streets. Police say the bandit strolled into the store with a t – shirt over his face... demanded money... got the cash from the register... and fled. Luckily... no one was hurt in Wednesday night's robbery in Wilkes – Barre.
In our high school football Game of the Week Bloomsburg defeated visiting Muncy bay a final score of 27-8. the Wagner's Trophies and Engraveables Player of the Game was Bloom's Ricky Klingerman. In Berwick action, the Bulldogs trounced Tunkhannock 50-3. In other local action, Southern Columbia beat Selinsgrove 54-14, Danville beat Jersey Shore 24-7, and Central Columbia fell to Mount Carmel 36-22.
