Fire investigators now call that blaze which destroyed four row homes Tuesday morning on West Gerard Street in Atlas “undetermined.” The fire began in a vacant home and quickly spread... so says Fire Chief Chaz Gasperetti. Only hours after the blaze was extinguished... a demolition crew was on the scene taking down the fire – ravaged buildings.

Covered Bridge Festival
The Columbia – Montour Visitors Bureau is bracing for their biggest event of the year... the annual Covered Bridge Festival at the Knoebles Amusement Resort in Locust Township. Thousands of people will visit with hundreds of artisans who are showing their wares... the event pumping a minimum of $8.5 – million of direct spending into the economy... so says the Bureau's Otto Kurecian. The festival opens Thursday morning... and runs through Sunday afternoon.
Unemployment in northeast Pennsylvania is checking in at 9.2% in August. A spokesperson for the department of Labor and Industry says the rate is a tenth higher than it was in July. Overall... the statewide jobless rate in August gained two tenths of a percent... to 7.7%.
Three people are in jail... after they were busted for allegedly tossing bricks off a building and onto cars early Tuesday morning in Hazleton. 21 – year old Conrad DePuy of Trescow... John Hoffman of Hazleton and Eugene Kantner of Hazle Township... both 19... allegedly threw the bricks off the roof of an abandoned warehouse along West Diamond Avenue. A juvenile was also arrested and released to his parents. The trio faces a long list of charges.
A suspect wanted in connection with the shooting of a second man in Hazleton has been arrested. Fernando Torres – Torres was picked up in Philadelphia. He's accused of shooting a man in the neck last month during an altercation in Hazleton. Torres – Torres is now locked up in Luzerne County with bail set at a million dollars.
The high school football regular season will have passed the halfway mark with this weekend's games. Friday night's Muncy at Bloomsburg game could go a long way toward determining the 4th and final playoff spot in District 4 Class A according to Bloomsburg coach Mike Kogut. It will be a special night at Tiger Stadium on Friday. Southern Columbia is celebrating 50 years of Tiger football. The very first Southern Columbia team- the team of 1963- will be honored before the unbeaten Tigers play Selinsgrove.
