Bloomsburg Fair / Corbett

Governor Tom Corbett spent about an hour on the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds Tuesday... and it was profitable for the fair association. The Governor and Agriculture Secretary George Grieg delivering a check for $21,000 out of the PA Fair Funds. Earlier in the day... Governor Corbett was in Hazleton for an event... but said the fair was always top of mind.


Penn State / Corbett

The N – C – double - A says Penn State will gradually get back football scholarships taken away over the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal. The sanctioning body crediting the University for making significant improvements in it's athletics programs. While visiting the Bloomsburg Fair on Tuesday... Governor Corbett says the move makes him very happy. The N – C – double - A says five scholarships will be restore next year... and 15 more will be phased in until the school reaches the limit of 86 in the 2016 – 17 season.


PPL Plant

Operators at the Susquehanna Steam Electric station in Salem Township... north of Berwick... has reconnected the Unit 2 generator to the regional electric grid. That happened Tuesday after wrapping up an inspection of its turbines. The unit was shut down and taken off line earlier this month. Workers replaced a small number of turbine blades, which had indications of cracking, and performed some minor repairs in areas of the plant that are accessible only when the unit is shut down.


Alcohol Education Grant

The Bloomsburg Police Department is one of 24 agencies... statewide.. to receive a grant from the Pennsylvania Liquor control board aimed at reducing underage and high risk drinking. In a news release... the local department plans to use the grant money to increase officer presence at strategic times... where underage and high risk drinking have historically been abundant and problematic. Overall... the PLBC is giving $2.1 - million dollars to 61municipalities... community groups... school... university's and law enforcement agencies through the Alcohol Education Grant Program.


Transportation Bill
The state house is getting more than a little nudge from some former lawmakers, as well as business and labor leaders. A bipartisan group is calling for final passage of the state senate's transportation funding plan. Former State Senator Rob Wonderling, now CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber, said its not a controversial vote. He said it's routine, something that happens every ten years or so. Auditor General Eugene DePasquale also called on his former colleagues in the house to pass the bill, saying the cost of inaction is much higher.


Perry Ave. Bridge

It's been there since 1926... a bridge on Perry Avenue... spanning a creek and connecting Hemlock and Montour Township... on Bloomsburg's west side. PennDOT's Rick Mason says the agency will lower the weight limit on the bridge from 40 tons to 32 tons for single vehicles... and 40 tons for longer wheelbase vehicles... such as tractor trailers. The Hemlock Creek span is one of hundreds of older structures across the state having it's weight limit reduced. That comes in the wake of the state legislature not coming to terms on a wide – ranging transportation bill.


Hazleton Arrest

A busy day for Hazleton Police. Officers took several people into custody Tuesday afternoon at a home at the corner of West 16th and Alter Streets following a drug investigation. Chief Frank DeAndrea said tips from neighbors helped in their on – going investigation.


Teacher's Alleged Theft

The former president of the Wyoming Area teachers union could do some jail time after she was charged with embezzling more than $30,000. Authorities say 48 – year old Lisa Barrett of Shavertown has agreed to plead guilty. She's accused of taking the money through the alleged misuse of a union credit card between 2006 and 2012. No sentencing date has been set.


Plea Deal

Former Luzerne County Controller Walter Griffith has worked out a plea deal in a case of recording conversations of people without their knowledge. Instead... of going to prison... Griffith was given three years probation... and cannot run for public office during that time. Griffith had faced three felony illegal wiretapping counts... but instead... he pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor charges.

HS Football

High school football's regular season reaches the halfway mark this weekend, and three area teams are still unbeaten- Berwick, Southern Columbia, and Danville. All three are ranked in the top ten in the state by the Pennsylvania Football News. Southern Columbia is ranked first in Class A... Berwick is ranked 8th in Class AAA... and Danville is 8th in Class AA.


Berwick Football

Friday night Berwick faces Selinsgrove at Crispin Field. Selinsgrove coach Dave Hess, whose team has a 3-1 record, believes Berwick is good enough to make a long run in the postseason. You can hear Friday's Selinsgrove at Berwick game on Classic Rock 103.5. The coverage starts at 6 O'clock with The Coach Curry Show.


PHL Phillies

In Major League Baseball Tuesday night... the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Miami Marlins by a score of 2 to 1. The Phillies and Marlins conclude their series in Miami Wednesday night. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:35. In other games Tuesday night... the Pittsburgh Pirates outlasted the Chicago Cubs 8 to 2... the New York Mets dumped the Cincinnati Reds 4 to 2... and the New York Yankees were blanked by the Tampa Bay Rays 7 to nothing.
