Deadly Shooting in Washington

There has been a deadly shooting rampage at Washington's Navy Yard. At least 12 people were killed. One gunman was killed. He is identified as 34 - year old Aaron Alexis... a civilian contractor from Ft. Worth, Texas. Police say Alexis acted alone... and there were no other gunmen involved. The investigation continues as to how he got weapons into the heavily guarded building.

 

PPL Steam Electric

Operations are back to normal at the PPL Steam Electric Station... north of Berwick in Salem Township. Operators declared a so – called “unusual event” at midday Sunday after water was discovered leaking inside a room at the plant's Unit 2 reactor building. The nuclear reactor of Unit 2 was shut down Saturday... and taken off line for repairs. An “unusual event” is the lowest of the emergency classification established by the U-S Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

 

Saving the Ber-Vaughn Pool

A man who works in Berwick is hoping to make a 10 – thousand dollar donation earmarked to get the now – defunct Ber – Vaughn Park swimming pool in order to get it running again. Marc Cosgrove says he plans to walk and bike an estimated 90 miles around Columbia and Luzerne Counties to make it happen... looking for donations along the way. Cosgrove begins his trek this Friday... starting at the pool.... then through Bloomsburg... going to the northern part of the county... as well as Luzerne county before finishing at Ber – Vaughn Park.

 

Emergency Preps

September is national emergency preparedness month.... and although we've dodged a lot of severe weather this summer... we should always be on our toes. Michelle Frey with Columbia County Emergency Management... says even an event... such as a thunderstorm we need to be prepared with things such as a flashlight... and a battery – operated radio. The bottom line... according to the EOC's Frye.... always be prepared for any event... and have a plan of action for your family.

 

Hazleton Shooting

No one is in custody in connection with the shooting of a Hazleton man Saturday afternoon. The 40 – year old man was dropped off at Hazleton General Hospital with a gunshot wound of the throat. No identity has been released, but it appears the shooting took place at a business on North Poplar... between East Spruce Alley and East Green Street. Hazleton Police are continuing the investigation.

 

Hazleton Suspect

Luzerne County authorities have taken a 21 year old man into custody for a West Hazleton shooting.  Christopher Vega is facing a host of charges following an incident on East Broad Street earlier this month. One man... was shot in the leg... the second was beaten up. Vega is now in the Luzerne County Prison.

 

Millville Road

The milling and paving of Millville Road in Bloomsburg got underway Sunday night. Contractor Glen Hawbaker, Incorporated plans to pave the road from Main and Iron Streets in Bloomsburg to the Millertown Road area. Other work is taking place at night this week near Millville and Iron Dale Road near the entrance to the United Water Company plant. The contractor is expected to have all the work completed by the end of the week.

 

Common Core

Controversial new graduation requirements have cleared a hurdle and are advancing. The graduation standards known as Common Core won approval from the state Board of Education, but still have to clear several other authorities before taking effect. The plan calls for new standards for the class of 2017 in Algebra, Biology and Literature...Composition and Civics would be added by 2020. The governor, House & Senate Education committees and the Attorney General are among those who still have to sign off on Core standards.

BU Football

The Bloomsburg University football team won their second straight game to start the season with a 47-35 win at Edinboro Saturday afternoon. With 8:39 to play, senior running back Franklyn Quiteh made PSAC history. Quiteh became the career rushing leader... running for just over 5,700 yards during his BU Career. Quiteh had 231 yards rushing and three touchdowns and was named the PSAC Eastern division player of the week. Defensive honors went to the Huskies' junior safety Tomas Cabrera who had a fumble recovery, an interception, and eight tackles. The Huskies play at Kutztown Saturday afternoon.

 

NFL

In the NFL Sunday... The Philadelphia Eagles losing to the San Diego Chargers 33-30 …. and the New York Giants losing to the Denver Broncos 41-23. Monday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers play the Bengals in Cincinnati.

 

PHL Phillies

In baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Washington Nationals 11-2 on Sunday. Monday night the Phils play Miami at home. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30.

 

MLB

In other games Sunday... the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Chicago Cubs 3-2... the New York Mets beat Miami 1-0 in 12 innings... and The Boston Red Sox downed the New York Yankees 9 to 2.
