Power Problem at BU

An electrical short circuit to the main service supplying juice to the entire Bloomsburg University campus... failed Wednesday afternoon.... throwing the entire campus in the dark. That word coming from a University spokesperson. There is an unconfirmed report that says the Geisinger – Bloomsburg Hospital was also effected. Crews from Pennsylvania Power and Light restored service to the upper campus area... then began fixing the outage on the lower campus. Classes were immediately canceled... and that includes all Wednesday evening classes. Until the power is restored.... there will be extra campus security increasing their patrols.

 

Bloomsburg Fire Department

When you opened the door... It had the smell of a new truck. A fire engine recently manufactured by KME in Nesquehoning stopped by the Bloomsburg Fire Department Tuesday night... where volunteers got a chance to smell and touch the engine with a rescue ladder on top. Fire Chief Bob Rupp says they want to replace an engine with a new piece.... so he's seeking quotes. Cost of the new apparatus is in the neighborhood of $650,000. Meantime... town council is expected to include the purchase price in the 2014 budget.

 

Barletta / Syria

Congressman Lou Barletta of Hazleton says he won't support a military attack on Syria... following a classified briefing he received at the beginning of the week. Mr. Barletta said President Obama hasn't laid out a clear plan of action... as well as the ramifications of such a strike. Mr. Obama said military action is necessary after the Assad government allegedly used gas on a thousand people involved in an uprising.

 

Reithoffer / Safety

The rides of the Reithoffer Shows are making their way to the grounds of the 158th Bloomsburg Fair. But, how safe are the rides which are set up and dismantled an estimated 40 times a year? Rick Reithoffer says they're safe due to constant inspections since he travels from state to state. This year's Bloomsburg Fair has a “soft opening” scheduled for September 20th. The exposition runs through the 28th.

 

Caregiver Forum

State Representative David Millard is hosting a senior caregiver support forum on Thursday evening in Benton. The forum is designed to inform family and friends... who are caregivers... the services available to them. For example... insurance and Medicare programs... hospices... elder law... as well as independent living. The forum to be held Thursday night at the Northern Columbia County Community Center in Benton. The event getting under at 6:30.

 

Senior Expo

Representative Kurt Masser who takes care of Columbia, Montour and Northumberland Counties in Harrisburg is hosting his annual Senior Expo on Thursday at All Home Days Park in Elysburg. The event begins at 10 O'clock... and several hundred people are expected to attend. With the expo underway... Representative Masser's offices will be closed in Elysburg and Danville, but will reopen Friday.

 

Scott Township / Flood

Two years ago on this date... we were all cleaning up from the destruction left behind by the flood waters of tropical storm Lee. The big question at the time was where do we turn next. But for Scott Township.... things have returned to normal for many... so says Secretary Eric Stahley. Meantime the federal, state and local governments have purchased 22 flood damaged home along Old Berwick Road and White Birch Lane. All should be all torn down by the end of the month.

 

Teen Charged

A 16 – year old Kingston Township teenager spent his first night behind bars. Tyler Duda is facing third degree murder... and a host of other charges after Nanticoke police say he hit and killed a pedestrian walking home from a 4th of July celebration. Duda did not have a license and had alleged stolen his mother's SUV... striking and killing Nickolas Zurilla as he tried to cross West Union Street in Nanticoke. Investigators say he was traveling at 72 miles an hour in a 25 zone. Duda is being held on a million dollars bail.

 

Weatherly Fire

A Weatherly business... south of Hazleton.. is up and running Wednesday morning following a fire at Weatherly Casting early Tuesday. Fire crews were called to the plant after employees tried to douse a small blaze. The fire was apparently on the roof... but it was extinguished quickly.

 

Milton Vandalism

Northumberland County investigators are trying to figure out who vandalized an elementary school over the weekend. The James Baugher School in Milton was vandalized... but the custodial staff cleaned up the mess. Police not saying what the damage was. A month ago.... the While Deer Elementary school in the Milton district was the target of vandals.
