Dumpster Fire

Short work was made to... what could have been... a disastrous dumpers fire behind an apartment building at 123 West Main Street in Bloomsburg Tuesday afternoon. Right around 2:45... some one called in the alarm... and Bloomsburg Fire Chief Bob Rupp said a lot of people pitched in to bring the initial blaze in the dumpster under control such as neighbors and police officers. Firemen using a line off a Bloomsburg pumper truck to make sure the fire was out. No word as to what caused that dumpster in Bloomsburg to catch fire.

 

Microsoft / Nokia

The word that Microsoft plans to purchase wireless phone maker Nokia for $7.3 - billion has startled the business world... both locally and across the nation... as well as around the globe. But what effect will it have locally. Ric Dworsak of Tel – Us Communications on Route 11 says he believes it won't really be a game changer in the wireless industry. That follows by just hours the announcement that Verizon was purchasing 45 percent of it's wireless business from Britain's Vodafone... giving it total control of it's wireless division... and boosting it's bottom line.

 

Berwick Area United Way

The Berwick Area United Way kicks off the start of it's annual fund raising drive on Wednesday. The organization supports 14 core agencies... but the United Way is slowly changing so say CEO Ginny Crake. Ms. Crake says her organization wants to raise an estimated $400,000... the same goal as it's been the past couple of years.

 

Gas Prices

If you've got to fill up your gas tank... you'll be paying more. The Triple - A Fuel Gauge report out Tuesday shows that self – serve, unleaded regular is averaging $3.62 a gallon... down a penny from the weekend... but up eight cents from a week ago. The reason... unrest in the middle east... forcing the prices of a barrel of crude to hit a high of of $112.00.

 

Hazleton Shooting

A Hazleton woman is in the Luzerne County jail after she allegedly shot a man in the fact late Monday night. Police telling us the incident happened in the 700 block of North James Street. That's when 28 – Mary Kirkpatrick is accused of shooting the man in the face. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment.

Kirkpatrick is facing a host of charges.

 

Castawayz Fire

Still no word as to what cause a weekend fire that extensively damaged a Briar Creek Township bar and restaurant on Route 93. The Castawayz's went up in flames midday Saturday... forcing four people to flee from the bar... as well as a tenant who lived in an apartment above the business. No one was injured.

 

Prevailing Wage / State Revenue

Two more hearings are expected to be held this month dealing with a proposal to increase the cost of construction project that would trigger prevailing wage for those working on the job. Right now... it stands at $25,000... but State Representative David Millard of Berwick wants that limit raised to $100,000 before union – type wages kick in. A hearing was held in Stroudsburg last week... with hearings now set for Williamsport and Johnstown later this month. Meantime... only two months into the state's current budget... and the state seems to be holding it's own with revenue coming into the treasury... and bills being paid. That word from State Representative Millard. Appearing on a recent edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz... Mr. Millard says the state should be in fine shape as the fiscal year continues....

 

Susquehanna River Workshop

The Susquehanna River can be a great assert to the communities along it's banks... but it can also cause devastation... as we found out two years ago. Now... Lewisburg – based SEDA – COG is holding a workshop on the Bloomsburg University campus later this month dealing with the river and understanding flooding impacts... so says the organization's Trish Carothers. The Susquehanna River Town Workshop to be held September 30th at the Kehr Union on the B-U campus.

 

Ralpho Fatal

An 80 – year old Danville woman died Sunday when she pulled into the path of a rollback truck at the intersection of Route 54 and Airport Road. Stella Adams was pronounced dead at Geisinger Medical Center. The rollback's driver 63 – year old Donald Whalen of Kulpmont was also injured and taken to Geisinger. Northumberland County Coroner James Kelley says Adams died due to blunt force trauma.

 

Ashland Fire

Investigators say they don't know the cause of a fire in Ashland early Monday morning... making eight people homeless. The apartment building was located on West Centre Street... and despite investigators visiting the scene... no one seems to have a concrete answer. There were no injuries in the early morning blaze.

 

Body Found

The body of a teenager.. missing for the past week... was found over the weekend near Newport... in Luzerne County. The body of 17 – year old Zachary Patrician was discovered near Glen Lyon. Police offering no other comment. Patrician was the object of a search the past week.

 

Dorrance Stick up

A late Monday night robbery at a Dorrance Township gas station just off of Interstate 81. Police say someone strolled into the Sunoco station at exit 155...

The bandit held the cashier at gunpoint... got the money from the register and fled. No one was hurt in the late Monday stick up in Dorrance Township.

 

Jewelry Swiped

State Police are looking for a jewelry thief who made off with an estimated 15 – hundred dollars from a Barnesville home.. south of Hazleton. Police says the crook broke into the Maple Street home either late Sunday night or early Monday morning... making off with an assortment of jewelry.

 

Yard Sales

Hazleton City Council will soon be asked to enact an ordinance... calling for a five dollar permit for every yard sale held. It's being proposed by police chief Frank DeAndrea... who believes it will eliminate folks reselling products purchased at stores... and limit sales to only two a year. Some council members say they're reluctant to go along with the proposal.
