Prevailing Wage / David Millard

One of the hottest issues in Harrisburg starting next month is expected to be raising the prevailing wage threshold. A hearing on the issue was held Thursday in Stroudsburg. Currently the threshold is $25,000 for a project... above that... union - type wages must be paid. But State Representative David Millard has introduced a bill boosting it to $100,000... saving cash strapped township a lot of money. The current threshold was established in 1963. No rumblings out of Harrisburg yet if Millard's bill will get traction since it's opposed by labor unions...

 

Scott Twp Crash

Police investigated a one car crash which happened around 3 O'clock this morning at the Route 487 and the Interstate 80 interchange near Lightstreet. It incident happened when 21 – year old Timothy Cardoni of Aston.. near Philadelphia... lost control of his VW Jetta while trying to enter Interstate 80 at Lightstreet Road.

Scott Township police tell us Cardoni lost control of his car... hit a jersey barrier and came to rest against an embankment... trapping him inside the car temporarily. Lightstreet and Espy firefighters responded to the scene to extricate the driver... who was taken to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville for treatment.

 

Holiday Travel / Troop N

With most of us taking the next couple of days off for the Labor Day weekend... state troopers with Hazleton's Troop N won't have that opportunity. Trooper David Peters says cops stationed in Hazleton will be busy all weekend keeping the highways safe. Trooper Peters says many of the checkpoints will be in neighboring Luzerne County... but they're expected to spill over into Columbia County and near – by jurisdictions.

 

Berwick United Way

It's a fund raiser... but at the same time a way to have fun. The Berwick Area United Way presenting a so – called Zombie Run a week from Saturday at the Test Track Park off of Eaton Street. The bottom line is about being prepared for any emergency or natural disaster which may pop up in our lives. Geisinger Deaths

Geisinger Health System’s pediatric and congenital heart program has reported zero moralities in association with approximately 60 procedures surgeons performed in 2012. A Geisinger spokesman says among the surgeries, 13 percent were classified as having “high complexity” according to national standards of risk for congenital heart surgery. Such procedures have a 6 percent mortality rate according to 2012 Society of Thoracic Surgeons national data. Thirty percent of the Geisinger surgeries were also classified as having “moderate complexity,” which also has a national mortality rate of 3 percent according to the same data.

 

Wilkes – Barre Fire

An elderly Wilkes – Barre woman is dead after a three – alarm fire raced through her home on Kent Lane Thursday night. The first arriving fire crews find the woman unresponsive. Now it's up to the Luzerne County Coroner to determine cause of death. The careless use of smoking materials has been labeled as the cause of last night's fire in Wilkes – Barre.

 

West Hazleton Fire

Fire investigators say it was arson which extensively damaged a vacant home in West Hazleton this week. That word from a state police fire marshal. It's the third arson fire in the home on North 3rd Street in West Hazleton in the last three years.

 

Hazleton Hit & Run

Hazleton Police are looking for the driver of a gray, 2010 Volkswagen Jetta... wanted for questioning in running down an elderly man early Thursday morning. The unidentified man was struck as he tried to cross North Church Street and West Diamond Avenue. Police finding the man while on patrol. If you have information about the incident... call Hazleton Police.

Bloomsburg HS Football

The 2013 high school football regular season kicked off Friday night with all area teams in action. Mike Kogut made his Bloomsburg head coaching debut as the Panthers opened at home versus South Williamsport. Bloomsburg came within reach of a last-minute victory but missed on a 2-point conversion, ending the game in a 27-26 South Williamsport win.

 

Berwick HS Football

At Crispin Field, Berwick handily defeated Crestwood 41-7.

 

Other HS FB

In other games Friday night, Danville beat Milton 41-0, Central Columbia beat Hughesville 13-12, Southern Columbia beat Pius X 66-28 and Columbia Montour Vo Tech came up short against Sayre, 34-14 was the final.

In baseball, in the final game of their series in New York Thursday afternoon... the New York Mets got by the Philadelphia Phillies 11 to 3. The Phil's open a weekend series Friday afternoon against the Cubs in Chicago. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 1:45.
