Bloomsburg Town Council
In an effort to spiff up the area... the Bloomsburg Town Council Monday night okayed two projects which will make a difference in our lives... through the use of state Community Development Block Grant dollars. SEDA – COG's Bill Seigel telling local lawmakers an estimated $163,000 are available for the town. Projects selected include a trail from the Town Park to Streater Field. Also 109,000 is earmarked for the replacement of curbs which are ADA compliant... and another $29,000 for administration and planning. The town should know by the end of the years if they're successful in getting funding.
The talk around the water cooler these days is what to do about the Affordable Care Act... or Obamacare. Many employers and employees getting hit with higher premiums. US Senator Pat Toomey... in Danville for a town hall meeting on Monday... telling reporters there is an opportunity to derail it's implementation. However, Columbia – Montour County Chamber of Commerce President Fred Gaffney says he didn't hear any recommendations for solutions. For his part... Senator Toomey says he'll continue to fight the implementation of the Mr. Obama's Affordable Care Act.
State Police are investigating a truck crash in rural Northumberland County which left two people dead. The accident happened at midday Monday on Rushtown Road... outside of Elysburg. The names of the victims have not yet been released. Investigators say the truck was eastbound when the driver lost control... hit a tree and flipped on it's roof... catching fire. One person was found inside the truck... the other trapped under it. Right now... police are trying to notify relatives.
PA Education Secretary
Governor Tom Corbett asked for his resignation and he got it...Acting Education Secretary Dr. William Harner is resigning immediately after a little more than two months on the job. That's according to a statement from Governor Corbett's office. Dr. Carolyn Dumaresq...the department's executive deputy secretary...is taking his place. Dumaresq has been with the education department for at least nine years. She's also held several leadership positions at the P-A State Education Association. The statement did not give a reason for the department change.
The countdown is on for the start of the last big travel weekend of summer. The Labor Day Holiday weekends means millions of Americans will be traveling 50 – miles or more from home starting Friday. The Triple – A's Jenny Robinson says all of us are ready to get back on the road. The bottom line... there will be a 4.2% increase in travel... putting an estimated 34 – million Americans on the highway.
The price of gasoline around Northeastern Pennsylvania is holding steady as we head into the Labor Day holiday weekend. The latest Triple A Fuel Gauge report shows self – serve, unleaded regular is averaging $3.52 - a gallon... the same as it was over the weekend. A week ago... we were paying an average of $3.53 a gallon.
Schuylkill County Shooting
An assault of a person in the St. Clair area of Schuylkill County... has led to the shooting of the driver of an SUV near Hometown... south of Hazleton. Authorities have not released the name of the man shot along Route 54... or whether State Police or a municipal officer shot him. Whatever the case... the SUV's driver was treated by first responders along White Owl Drive... then air lifted to a trauma Center.
A Kingston man is facing attempted murder charged following an incident earlier this month in Wilkes – Barre. 22 – year old Andre Fuller is facing a list of charges... including attempted murder in the August 3rd shooting of William Uggaino of Park Avenue. Uggaino was critically injured in the shooting.
Several NFL scouts have already been to Bloomsburg University practices this preseason and many more are expected. Two players that have the attention of those scouts are senior offensive linemen Brian Clark and Matt Feiler. Huskies offensive coordinator Brian McBryan says both players must step up to the plate in order to get to the next level. The Husky's open the season September 7th at home against Stonehill College of Massachusetts.
In the first game of a four game series in New York last night... the Philadelphia Phillies downed the New York Mets 2 to 1. Game two is Tuesday night. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:35.
In other action last night... the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the New York Yankees 5 to 2.
