Central Schools Open

The Central Columbia School District is welcoming students and teachers back to the classroom Thursday... after a summer break. But the best made plans for the school year may change if the School Board has it's way... so says Superintendent Harry Mathias. The district will undertake the renovation of the Junior / Senior High School. The building in the 4700 block of Old Berwick Road was first opened 50 – years ago... and is in dire need of renovation.

 

White Deer School

Some vandalism won't keep schools from opening in Union County Thursday. Earlier this week... a couple of classrooms and a teachers lounge at White Deer Elementary were vandalized. Not a problem for a maintenance crews who cleaned up the mess. State Police at Milton are investigating the break-in and vandalism... but thus far... no one has been arrested.

 

Danville Middle School

An eye opening experience for Danville Police Chief Eric Gill Wednesday. He spent some time at the intersection of Routes 11 and 54... now under construction due to a flood project... thinking about what Monday will bring when Danville schools open. Chief Gill saying the area was a bit crazy... with drivers making up rules of the road as they went along. The big problem Chief Gill sees... is parents south on Route 11 and want to turn left into the middle school to drop off their kids. He suggests using school busing to get the kids to the middle school until the flood control project is wrapped up later this year.

 

Office of Aging

It's one of the biggest events held yearly... and it involves the Columbia – Montour Office of Aging. The agency is holding its sixth annual Pig Roast Saturday at the Catawissa Boat Club... on the west side of the Catawissa Bridge. Director Kathy Lynn says the event raises a lot of money for some programs not normally covered in their budget. Ms. Lynn says the event gets underway at midday Saturday at the Boat Club. Tickets are available at the door.

 

Hazleton Bank / Woman

Hazleton police spent part of Wednesday looking for a woman in the city's Heights section... that after police were sent to the Landmark Bank on South Poplar Street... responding to a call of an attempted robbery. No one is saying what happened at the bank... or why the woman is being sought.

 

Crime Watch

A group of Hazleton residents met with city officials this week... and they're talking about crime. The big issues include robberies... break – ins... a drug problem and shootings. Meantime... Police Chief Frank DeAndrea will hold a meeting with area law enforcement officers in October dealing with a dog fighting problem which recently surfaced.

 

Francis Slocum

A lack of lifeguards has closed the swimming pool at the Frances Slocum State Park in Luzerne County. Folks stopping by this week found the facility locked... and the pool empty. The reason the park has no lifeguards is the fact many of the folks watching over the pool are headed back to school

 

Match Six

While its a lot less than those multi - state lottery jackpots of several hundred million dollars, a Pennsylvania lotto game is in the middle of a long jackpot run. It started in mid-May and now the Match 6 lotto jackpot has topped 4 million dollars. The drawing is Thursday night. One ticket gives you three sets of numbers- three chances to win the big prize and four chances to win a smaller prize by combining all of the numbers.

HS Football

Four area high school football teams are ranked in the state's preseason top ten by the Pennsylvania Football News. In Class AAA, Berwick is ranked 8th in the state. In class AA, Danville is also ranked 8th. In Class A, Southern Columbia is ranked second in the state and Bloomsburg is ranked 9th. The high school football regular season kicks off next Friday.

 

PHL Phillies

In major league baseball Wednesday night... The Philadelphia Phillies got by the Colorado Rockies 4 to 3. The final game of the series is Thursday night at Citizens Bank Park. Coverage on the whlm stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30.

 

Other MLB Games

In other games Wednesday... the Atlanta Braves beat the New York Mets 4-1 in ten innings. The red – hot Pittsburgh Pirates were downed by the San Diego Padres 2 to 1... and the New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Bluejays 4 to 2.
