The westbound lanes of Interstate 80 are open this morning following a tractor – trailer crash last night near the Mifflinville exit. Police say the wreck happened in the on – going construction zone near the closed on – ramp. Just one big rig was involved... the Michigan driver was not injured despite the fact the cab of the tractor was ripped from the chassis... ending up in the median. It was a six hour operation with the last of the first responders departing the area around 2:15 Tuesday morning.
The Bloomsburg Area School District opens Wednesday for the 2013 – 2014 session... a day after teachers wrapped their three days of in – service training. An estimated 1,600 kids are enrolled... and keeping them safe is one issue Superintendent Cos Curry has on his plate. Superintendent Curry says he's working with area law enforcement on that plan... updating it when it's needed.
It's been at the corner of Third and Pine Streets since the early 1920's... and it's up for sale. Now... the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is taking bids on the 14,000 square foot building. At a public meeting in Berwick Monday night... the department's Mark Austin says it's surplus property the National Guard must get rid of. The less than an acre plot... plus the building is assessed at $375,000 and the Armory is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The bids are due in by November 4th.
Work is underway to replace a 73 year old bridge... which has spanned Green Creek... a short distance from the intersection with Route 254 and the Rohrsburg Road. The Zahner's Creek Bridge is only 25 feet long... and PennDOT's Rick Mason says the work is being done by a in – house crew. The bridge will be replaced by a concrete box culvert which will allow the creek to flow through it. Construction is expected to be wrapped in September.
Berwick Football Pass
If you like Bulldog football... and you're over 65... the Berwick School Board has a deal for you. The board has decided that folks who are retirement age want something to do Friday night... so says school board member Rick Knorr. It's a freebee from the school board. Many were distributed Monday... but there is one more time to get one... and that's Thursday morning at the main entrance to the Berwick Senior High School on Fowler Avenue starting at 9 O'clock. After that.... passes can be obtained at the district offices on Line Street.
The Banks Township supervisors... near Hazleton... says thanks, but no thanks... and decided to drop the idea of purchasing the former Capriotti banquet hall to be used as township offices. Meantime.... a lawsuit against the purchase by township residents has been put on hold... remaining on stand – by... if the supervisors try to purchase the building for a second time. Also dropped was a plan to hire a private security firm to watch over township meetings as a result of those Ross Township shootings a few weeks ago.
Rush Township near Hazleton has hired a part – time police officer... and promoting a second. Patrolman Adam Sinton was promoted to corporal... while Robert Bechtel was hired as a part – time police officer... with a one – year probation period. The department is now up to three full time officers... while six part – timers are on the payroll.
The price of gas across northeastern Pennsylvania is holding somewhat steady. The latest Triple - A fuel gauge report shows self – serve, unleaded regular in the Scranton, Wilkes – Barre... Hazleton area averaging $3.53 a gallon. That's down a penny from the weekend... but up a penny from a week ago. The big reason... crude oil is selling in the range of $107 a barrel.
With all of their starting running backs and four of their starting offensive linemen returning from a team that went 12 and 1 last season, Southern Columbia's football team should once again have a strong running attack. But head coach Jim Roth is confident that sophomore quarterback Nick Becker and junior wide receiver Luke Rarig will help them to be a good passing team as well. Southern Columbia opens the regular season August 30th at home against Pius the 10th.
