Bloomsburg University

If you see some additional traffic around town... and SUV's stuffed with furniture... there's a good reason for that. Classes at Bloomsburg University begin next week... and students spent the weekend... and will spend this week moving into their apartments. BU's Bonnie Martin says the school will greet an estimated 1600 freshmen this fall. Starting next Monday... students will hit the textbooks until the first break of the semester comes up around the Thanksgiving day weekend.

 

Berwick Armory Meeting

The PA Department of Military and Veterans Affairs will hold a meeting Monday night dealing with the possible sale of the Berwick National Guard Armory... which sits at 3rd and Pine Streets. The meeting will also touch on the subject of selling state armories.. and the advantages of acquiring the property under a historic preservation covenant. Monday night's meeting will be held at the Berwick City Hall on North Market Street starting at 6 O'clock.

 

Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble

The Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble is beginning to start its 36th season of providing the area with thought – provoking entertainment. Original ensemble member James Goode says the area has been generous with donations, but also provides the inspiration for some of their productions such as “Letters to the Editor” and “Flood Stories.” First up for the 36th season is Williams Shakespeare's “Merchant of Venice” which begins October 3rd at the Alvina Krause Theatre on Centre Street in Bloomsburg.

 

Millville Crash

A visitation will be held Wednesday for an 80 – year old Orangeville man who died in a one – car accident in Millville over the weekend. Authorities say Robert Cameron was driving his car west on State Route 254 when he failed to negotiate a curve and slammed into a utility poll on the opposite side of the road. State Police say Cameron was pronounced dead by Columbia County Deputy Coroner Ron Taylor.

 

Millville Road

A resurfacing project along a two-mile section of Iron Street and Millville Road begins Monday. Prime contractor Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. will be working on highway between Route 11 in the Town of Bloomsburg and Mall Boulevard in Hemlock Township. PennDOT's Rick Mason says the work includes roadway base repairs, milling of the existing top layer of pavement, inlet and manhole adjustments, ADA-compliant curb ramps and new blacktop pavement. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane and controlled by flaggers.

 

Rt 239 Bridge

A new bridge on Route 239, about two miles north of Benton in Sugarloaf Township is back open to traffic. PennDOT's Rick Mason says the new bridge was built on the same alignment as its predecessor, which had been in service since 1934, and was classified as structurally deficient. Some finishing work remains... such as guardrail installation.

 

Hanover Fire

Fire investigators are expected to show up at a Hanover Township home sometime Monday. Flames tore through a vacant, two story structure on Solomon Street.. near Wilkes – Barre.. over the weekend.  Many believe the origin is suspicious. Folks were told to vacate the home last month. But there was still a family living in the rear portion of the building... and it's believe that's where the fire started.

 

Obama Visit

Final plans are being put in place for Friday's visit to Scranton of President Obama. He'll deliver a speech at Lackawanna College. His topic... affordable higher education. Mr. Obama's visit coincides with with a bus tour of Buffalo... Syracuse and Binghamton... in upstate New York.

 

Walter Mitchell

Bear Creek Mayor Walter Mitchell says he doesn't plan to seek the job of Luzerne County controller. He had considered running for the job when Walter Griffith resigned earlier in the month. However, Mitchell says he'll stick with his insurance and financial services business. Griffin, meantime, is facing charges of secretly recording conversations with out the other person's knowledge.

BU Football 

The Bloomsburg University football team will hold their fifth preseason practice Monday afternoon. The Huskies have the nation's leading rusher from last season in senior Franklyn Quiteh but will be without Eddie Mateo who ran for over 1000 yards in 2012. He is no longer in school and head coach Paul Darragh and his staff are looking for his replacement. The Huskies open the season is September 7th at home against Stonehill College of Massachusetts.

 

PHL Phillies

Two Los Angeles errors in the bottom of the 9th gave the Philadelphia Phillies a 3-2 win over the Dodgers Sunday ... the first win for new manager Ryan Sandburg. Monday night the Phils open a four game home series against Colorado. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begin with the pregame show at 6:30.

 

MLB Other Games

In other games Sunday, the Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-2 in 16 innings... the New York Mets lost a 4-3 decision to the San Diego Padres... and the New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox 9 to 6...

 

NFL

In NFL preseason football Sunday night... the Indianapolis Colts rolled over the New York Giants 20 to 12.

Joey Logano wins the NASCAR Cup Series 400 miler at the Michigan Speedway.
