Danville Roads

As part of Danville's flood control project... the busy intersection of Routes 11 and 54 is getting an update. But... narrowing all that traffic from three to two lanes is causing a lot of confusion. One person telling WHLM's Mark Williams drivers are making up the rules of the road as they go along. For example... if you northbound on Route 11... and want to go west on Route 54... you have to go an extra block... through a detour... according to the Borough's Dan Knorr. And it's probably not going to get better anytime soon... says one observer.. since Fair week is a month away and will add to the bottleneck. The intersection is expected to be under construction for the remainder of the year.

 

Suspected Berwick Meth Lab

A suspected drug lab was dismantled in Berwick on Wednesday. It was located in the 100 block of Summerhill Avenue. Two people were taken into custody. Thursday's edition of the Press – Enterprise identify the pair as 44 – year old Brian McLellan and 37 – year old Stanley Lunger. Both face a long list of charges. A near by daycare center was evacuated while authorities searched the home.

 

Catawissa Meth Lab

A Catawissa man is behind bars at the Columbia County Prison after being busted on a host of drug charges. The Press – Enterprise reporting in Thursday's edition... police searching the home of 34 – year old Todd McCarthy on Wednesday... after going through bags of his garbage that were placed at street side. McCarthy now being held in lieu of $75,000 bail.

 

Montour / DeLong Fair

The Montour - DeLong Fair... the 75th annual edition... continues to chug along just west of Washingtonville through Saturday night. But, since it's inception... the agricultural event has been run by volunteers... something that association president Bill Miller says is important today... as it was back in the late 30's when the fair began. The fair runs through Saturday night... with the event coming to a close with a huge fireworks display.

 

Airline Merger

A planned airline merger is being challenged in federal court and Pennsylvania is one of six states that has joined the legal action. Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane wants the planned merger between American Airlines... and US Airways stopped in it's tracks. The lawsuit comes after a decade of rapid consolidation of the nation’s airline industry.

 

Berwick Teen Hit

A Berwick teenager is recovering from injuries received Wednesday afternoon when she was struck by two cars... while dashing across Front Street... near Orange. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition... 15 – year old Natasha Welch apparently ran across Front Street.. when she was hit by a car... tossing her under a second... the wheel just missing her head. Welch was Life Flighted to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville where she is listed in “fair” condition.

 

Teen Pleads

A teen has pleaded guilty to murdering his great-grandfather in December 2009, and faces 14 to 28 years in prison under a plea bargain reached Wednesday in Luzerne County Court. 19 – year old Cody Lee... who was 15 at the time... will return for sentencing October 25th in Luzerne County Court. Police say that Lee carefully plotted the shotgun murder of 80-year-old Herbert Lee.

 

Sentencing

37 – year old Lehighton man has been sentenced to anywhere from 8 to 16 months in prison. Steven Schock pleaded guilty earlier this year for hitting the Jim Thorpe fire chief Bill Diehm while he directing traffic. The accident happened last July while Schock was driving a delivery truck under the influence.

 

Conyngham Street

The Conyngham Borough Council may awards some street paving projects when they meet next week. The issue of paving three streets came to a screeching halt when councilman Gary Gregory told his colleague Richard Sebring that the additional work on the three streets was never okayed by the entire council. The issue is now being researched by solicitor Chris Slusser.

 

Ashley City Hall

The Ashley Borough Council has voted to purchase the J-C Ehrlich Company building... just off Cemetery Street... turning it into a new City Hall. The purchase price is $550,000... $400,000 of which comes from state gaming funds. The current city hall is not handicapped accessible and has limited use.

 

Heinz Layoffs

Pittsburgh – based H-J Heinz company is eliminating 600 jobs across the U-S and in Canada. 350 of the jobs are in the Pittsburgh area. The job cuts come after the company was sold to private investors.  It's offering severance packages and job placement for those workers effected.

 

CVS

Clerks at the CVS Pharmacy chain will now challenge you when purchasing nail polish remover. They'll ask for your driver's license. The new policy is the company's way to fight meth making... since the acetone in nail polish remover is an important ingredient in making the drug.

BU Football

The Bloomsburg University football team begins preseason drills Thursday afternoon. For the first time since 1993, the Huskies begin those drills with someone other than Danny Hale as head coach. Interim head coach Paul Darragh is one of three new head coaches in the PSAC East including Kutztown's Drew Fulmer and Millersville's Brett Breitbach. Breitbach might have the biggest challenge considering the fact that Millersville has had 11 straight losing seasons. Breitbach comes from North Dakota where he had been the offensive coordinator.

 

PHL Phillies

In major league baseball last night... the Philadelphia Phillies were defeated by the Atlanta Braves 6 to 3. The Phillies have Thursday off. They start a home series against the Los Angeles Dodger Friday night.

 

In other games Thursday night... the Pittsburgh Pirates downed the Saint Louis Cardinals 5 to 1... the Los Angeles Dodgers got the best of the New York Mets 5 to 4... and the New York Yankees hammered the Los Angeles Angels 11 to 3.

 

Little League

An estimated 40,000 people lined the streets of downtown Williamsport Wednesday night for the Little League baseball parade. The Little League World Series begins Thursday.
