Bloomsburg School Start

Next week at this time... the estimated 1600 students in the Bloomsburg Area School District will be heading back to the classroom. The 2013 – 2014 school year will be challenging... as well as for the 138 – teachers in the district... and they'll hit the classroom this week... for in service training so says superintendent Cos Curry. The veteran teaching staff will be joined by newly – minted educators who will begin their first year in the classroom.

 

Bloomsburg / CDBG – DR

Big changes to Bloomsburg may be on the horizon if the Town gets the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery money it seeks. During a council meeting this week... the town... with the help of SEDA – COG will apply for $4.4 - million dollars in special funds created by the federal government's Housing and Urban Development Department. SEDA – COG's Bill Seigel says one of the more important projects on the list is relocated Snyder's Run which goes under Autoneum. That project, alone, comes in with a price tag of $552,000. Also on the town's wish list is acquiring and demolishing structures in six properties at $1 – million dollars.. as well as the reconstruction of the terminal building at the airport for $667,000. The application must be submitted by the end of the month.

 

Kuharchik / Temporary PFA

A WBRE – TV television personality has had a temporary protection of abuse ordered leveled against him by his ex – wife. Channel 28 meteorologist and “PA Live” host Dave Kuharchik is accused of sending threatening text messages and calling Kathleen Ankenbrand of West Pittston... wishing her ill – will in her battle with multiple sclerosis. The temporary PFA forbids Kuharchik from having contact with his ex... or any of his three kids. A hearing is now set for August 30th.

 

Sheppton Disaster

Remembering three men trapped underground in a Sheppton Mine in neighboring Schuylkill County. On Sunday... there will be a walk to the site of the Sheppton Mine Disaster... 50 – years to the day David Fellin... Henry Thorn... and Louis Bova were trapped underground. Fellin and Thorn were rescued in late August of 1963, but Bova didn't survive the cave in... and his body never recovered.

 

Katy Perry Truck

A man from Virginia was charged with driving under the influence after he crashed into the the tractor – trailer promoting entertainer Katy Perry's new album. Police say 46 – year old Donald Voight slammed into the big 18 – wheeler... with his tractor – trailer... and eventually returned to the scene... not wearing pants. Voight admitted he was drinking. The incident happening in the Wilkes – Barre Wal – Mart parking lot at the start of the weekend.

 

Business Closes

High rent... and a tumble in customer count has lead a long – time pizza shop to close it's doors in the Laural Mall in Hazleton. Dino's closed up shop the beginning of the month. The owner saying the one – two punch wasn't paying the bills. But, Dino's will be opening up at another location soon.

 

Northumberland County

If you're headed to Sunbury... you may be faced with additional security at the Northumberland County Courthouse. The County Commission voting to install a metal detector and place unarmed security guards at the building's entrance. The move follows the shootings in Ross Township... in Monroe County... last week. Commissioners say one metal detector will come out of storage. The changes are expected to be implemented quickly.

 

CVS / Nail Polish

Clerks at the CVS Pharmacy chain will now challenge you when purchasing nail polish remover. They'll ask for your driver's license. The new policy is the company's way to fight meth making... since the acetone in nail polish remover is an important ingredient in making the drug.

Berwick Bulldogs

Last season the Berwick High School football team won ten games, a Wyoming Valley Conference championship, and finished as a District 2 runner up. They accomplished that success even though Head coach George Curry had a limited off - season after taking over for Gary Campbell. Senior quarterback C.J. Curry, the head coach's grandson, says there's a world of difference between last season... and this season. Berwick plays their first preseason scrimmage Saturday morning at Central Mountain.

 

PHL Phillies

In major league baseball Tuesday night... the Atlanta Braves downed the Philadelphia Phillies 3 to 1.  Both teams slug it out again Wednesday night at Turner Field in Atlanta. The match up begins at 7:10... but you can catch all the action starting with the pre – game show at 6:35 on the WHLM Stations.

 

Other MLB action...

The Pittsburgh Pirates opened a big series against the second place Cardinals in Saint Louis Tuesday night. The Cardinals defeating the Pirates 4 to 3. In other games, it was the Los Angeles Dodgers downing the New York Mets 4 to 3... and the New York Yankees overwhelmed the Los Angeles Angels 14 to 7.
