Bloomsburg Town Council

The Bloomsburg Town Council Monday night gave Lewisburg – based SEDA – COG the go ahead to submit 14 proposed flood projects to the state for the nearly $30 – million dollars available for disaster recovery. The local projects total $4.4 – million dollars. Town administrator Bill Lowthert he believes the most challenging project on the list is the reconstruction of Ft. McClure Boulevard due to archeological artifacts that may be found... as well as due to the permitting process. Also on the list.. improvement in the drainage for the Snyder's Run / Port Noble area... the replacement of sidewalks in the 900 block of West Main Street.. as well as installing a generator at Town Hall.

 

State Supreme Court
Recent turmoil on the state supreme court has caused some delays and other unusual situations in important cases. Prior to the recent swearing in of newest Justice Correalle Stevens, the PA Supreme Court only had 6 justices, which meant the possibility of a tie. It's an issue for a case regarding Act 13 - which allows the state to supersede local zoning rules that aim to limit drilling. A lower court struck down that provision in favor of municipalities. Last year, six justices heard arguments in the case. Normally, that would mean Stevens wouldn't get a vote, but the state wants the case to be re-argued so that he can.

 

Montour – DeLong Fair

It's been around for the past 75 years... and the future is brighter than ever for the Montour – DeLong Fair near Washingtonville. The 2013 edition opened Monday night... and fair president Bill Miller says improvements have been made leading up to this years event... and more are planned. This year's Montour – DeLong Fair features live entertainment every night... as well as a tractor pull tonight. The fair runs through the week and opens everyday at 4:30... and at noon time on Saturday.

 

Obama Tour

It appears President Obama may visit Scranton next week. Officials in Washington say the president plans a swing starting Thursday in Buffalo.... then going to Syracuse and Binghamton. His tour ends in Scranton. The trip is all part of a series of speeches delivered around the country on his ideas for building the middle class and boosting the economy.

 

Powerball Winner

One Powerball ticket worth $2 - million from the August 10th drawing was sold at Wegmans Supermarket on Highland Boulevard in Wilkes – Barre. The winning ticket correctly matched all five white balls drawn... but not the red Powerball. Lottery officials say no one has come forward yet to claim the prize.

 

AVP Money

Some construction will be undertaken soon at the Wilkes – Barre / Scranton Airport at Avoca. U-S Senator Bob Casey announcing the airport is in line to receive a $480,000 grant. The money to be used for the reconstruction of the terminal's apron... in order to maintain it's structural integrity.

 

Rest Area

Work is continuing this week on the reconstruction of the Interstate 80 rest area in the westbound lane near Mifflinville. This week... the contractor performing the work has set up a daily quarter – mile lane closure in the west bound passing lane for a stone hauling operation. Also the truck parking area is closed. Work is expected to be wrapped up by the end of October.

BU Football

The Bloomsburg University football team is picked to finish second in the PSAC this season in the coaches poll released at Monday's preseason media day at Kutztown University. Defending divisional champion Shippensburg is the only team picked ahead of the Huskies. Defending conference champion IUP is picked to win the West.

 

PSAC

The PSAC has expanded with the addition of Seton Hill to the Western Division. Lock Haven has moved to the east, and Bald Eagles head coach John Allen likes the move. With 16 teams, the PSAC is now the largest football conference in the nation in all divisions.

 

PHL Phillies

In the first of a three game set in Atlanta Monday night... the Philadelphia Phillies hammered the Atlanta Braves 5 to 1. Game two is Tuesday night at Turner Field. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:35.

 

In other MLB games from last night... the Los Angeles Dodgers downed the the New York Mets 4 to 2... and the New York Yankees just got by the Los Angeles Angels 2 to 1.

In NBA news, former San Antonio Spurs assistant Brett Brown has been named the new head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers.
