Municipal Building Safety

Investigators in Ross Township in Monroe County are still trying to assess the events of Monday night when a man walked into the municipal building and opened fire on Supervisors... killing three people. Now... at least one local township secretary is made aware of what could happen. Eric Stahley of Scott Township says when something happens... such as in Ross Township... it's always in the back of your mind. Scott Township supervisors meet Tuesday night... and as always... Stahley says there will be police presence.

 

Bloomsburg National's

Friday is the opening day of the second annual Bloomsburg National's Powered by Carlisle Events at the fairgrounds. Anywhere between 800 and a thousand classic cars will be on display during the three day event. But... if you really want to get a street side look... there will be a gridlock... Friday afternoon... on Main Street... so says Mike Garland of Carlisle Events.

 

Point Twp. Fatal

A Tharptown man is dead... after suffering a heart attack at the wheel of his pick – up truck at the intersection of Routes 147 and 405 in Point Township... Northumberland County. Authorities say 45 – year old Harley Gonsar was pronounced dead at the scene. Northumberland County Corner James Kelley said Gonsar died of sudden cardiac arrest. His truck striking a mail box... and going across a lawn... before ending up in a field.

 

Stolen Markers

A Freeland cemetery has become the target of vandals. Authorities say nearly 500 brass grave markers which at one time held American flags have been stolen from St. Ann's cemetery. It happened overnight recently. Now... state police at Hazleton are investigating.

 

Animal Cruelty Charges

A Mifflin Township woman has been charged by state police with five counts of animal cruelty. Police say they first investigated 37 – year old Marla Hayes of Zenith Road back in February after a vet was called to take care of one of the horses Hayes boards at her farm. The horse eventually had to be put down and a subsequent examination found the animal died of malnutrition. A further investigation revealed four other horses also showed signs of not being fed. A date has not been set for a preliminary hearing.

 

Senior Expo

An estimated 500 people turned out for Wednesday's Senior Expo at the Espy Fire Hall sponsored by State Representative David Millard. Among the vendors promoting their products was Columbia County District Attorney Tom Leipold who's trying to get a year round drug take – back program established. DA Leipold says accidental drug overdoses is becoming the second leading cause of death in the USA.... second only to heart disease. DA Leipold says he's trying to get some permanent collection stations at police department's across the county where people can drop off the medications they don't need.

 

BTE

It's been a long journey for the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble... as they get ready to head into their 36th season of productions. For one original BTE cast member... James Goode... it all started pretty simply back in the mid 1970's. He and some other folks came to Bloomsburg to study with Alvina Krause and started the acting company. Now... BTE heads into it's 36th season... starting with the production of William Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice which debuts October 3rd.

 

Wilkes – Barre Twp. Fire Chief

Wilkes – Barre Township Fire Chief John Yuknavich is in trouble with the law again. The 49 – year old Yuknavich... already facing theft charges... was arrested on a half – dozen theft counts alleging he made off with $48,000 in fire company money for his own use. He initially ran afoul of the law last year on a number of charges... including allegedly writing himself $11,000 in checks from the fire department account... and unauthorized use of a fire department charge card.

 

Luzerne Controller

Walter Griffith is no longer Luzerne County's controller. He tendered his resignation Wednesday... with county officials naming senior auditor Patricia Llewellyn to serve in his place through the end of the year. No reason given for the resignation... but Griffith is facing felony charges of making recordings of conversations with several people... without their knowledge in 2010 and 2011.

 

New Chancellor

Former Florida Lt. Governor Frank Brogan has been selected as the next chancellor of PA's 14 university State System of High Education. The unanimous decision was made Wednesday. Mr. Brogan served under governor Jeb Bush... and has been the chancellor of the State University System of Florida since 2009. Salary for Frank Brogan is set at $327,000 a year.

 

Powerball

No winners in Pennsylvania following last night's multi – state Powerball drawing. A pair of ticket holders in New Jersey... and one in Minnesota will share an estimated $448 – million dollar jackpot.
