Ross Twp. Shooting
Authorities in Monroe County... in the Pocono's... are still trying to figure out what triggered 59 – year old Rockne Newell to get some weapons... and fire shots into the Ross Township municipal building Monday night. Three people died... several others were injured. Newell, had a long-running dispute with the township over his property, which was recently condemned.
Geisinger Health Systems says it plans to purchase the Holy Family Convent on Montour Street... converting the six – story building to general office and conference space... as well as construct additional parking. The purchase price is $4.5 – five million. The Convent is run by the Society of the Sisters of Christian Charity of New Jersey... and has been owned by the sisters since 1898. The 60 residents at the convent will eventually be moved to a new facility in Mendham, New Jersey. Closing is expected early next month.
National Night Out
Bloomsburg residents got an opportunity to speak one on one with the area's first responders during National Night Out Tuesday evening. The event taking place at the Bloomsburg Town Pool... with police, fire and EMS personnel. The Pennsylvania State Police had a presence there from Troop N in Hazleton. Trooper David Peters says he got his law enforcement message to those folks at the event. In a previous interview... Ken Auchter of the Bloomsburg Police Department felt National Night Out is a way to break down barriers between police and the public.
PennDOT says it expects to close down the Zaners Road Bridge in Greenwood Township. In it's place a brand new bridge... ready for another 50 – years of service. The current 25 – foot span has been in place since 1940 and it's classified as structurally deficient. PennDOT's Rick Mason says most of the work will be preformed by agency crews. Mason says a detour will be in place next weeks as work begins using Rohrsburg Road and Route 487.
Luzerne County Controller Walter Griffith is expected to resign Wednesday. Griffith is facing wiretapping charges filed by the state attorney general's office for recording three conversations back in 2010 and 2011 without the other persons consent. The resignation means Griffith will also drop his bid for reelection.
Hazleton Police Department
Hazleton Police Chief Frank DeAndrea is trying to spiff up the image of his department. HPD taking delivery of five sport utility vehicles at KME Kovatch in Nesquehoning this week. The big change is the new deep blue and gold colors on the latest batch of cruisers. The 2013 Ford Interceptors are being obtained through a lease – purchase agreement.
Kiddie Porn Charges
A Dallas area man is in jail... charged with child pornography. 25 – year old Caleb Fox of Dallas Township is facing 17 felony charges. Investigators from the State Attorney General's office finding images on his desktop computer... four laptops and a smart phone. He was arraigned... and is now locked up on $50,000 bail.
Wilkes – Barre Robbery
Still no suspect in custody after a Wilkes – Barre convenience store was held up early Tuesday morning. Police say a man with a mask strolled into the Turkey Hill outlet on East Main Street... demanding money. The bandit getting away with cash from the register.
Two senior members of the Bloomsburg University football team have been selected as two of the top 100 Division 2 players in the nation by D2Football.com Those players are center Chris Steck and defensive tackle Chris Kennedy.
Chase Utley had three hits Tuesday night, including a triple, and two RBIs, and Darin Ruf and Carlos Ruiz homered as the Philadelphia Phillies survived Domonic Brown dropping a potential game-ending fly ball in left field to hold off the Chicago Cubs 9 to 8. It was the first of their three game home series against the Cubbies. Game two is Wednesday night at 7:05. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30.
