Municipal Building Shooting
Three people are dead... shot at a town meeting in Ross Township... in Monroe County in the Poconos. Authorities say 59-year-old Rockne Newell allegedly opened fire at the township's municipal building Monday night. Two people were dead at the scene... a third person died at an Allentown hospital... while a fourth person underwent surgery at a hospital in near – by Stroudsburg. Newell had an on – going dispute with Ross Township officials involving his property... which was recently condemned.
Although it's been nearly two years since Tropic Storm Lee... and it's resulting flood waters made a mess of Bloomsburg... disaster money for business is still available. All you have to do to possibly get some of it... according to the Columbia – Montour Chamber of Commerce President Fred Gaffney... is to apply. The deadline to apply is Thursday... and the requests will be sent on to Columbia County as they apply for the low interest loan money through the PA Department of Community and Economic Development.
Point Twp. Fire
A state police fire marshal will spend some time this week trying to figure out what started a blaze which destroyed a home on Dogwood Lane... in Point Township... near the drive – in theater. Firemen were called to the 9 year old home at mid – afternoon Monday... and all they could do is watch while the flames swept through the wood – frame structure. The people who lived there were in the swimming pool... discovering flames in their garage and were quickly spread by the winds. No one was injured. The home is a complete loss.
Cumberland County – based Carlisle Events is starting to roll into town for this weekend's Bloomsburg Nationals. By the time the event is history... anywhere from 800 to a thousand classic cars will be on the show field. Carlisle Event's Mike Garland says the car's aren't the only highlights.... fair food is the big anchor for the event. Although the advance personnel will be in town by mid – week... the cars will start rolling into the fairground Friday morning...
The Powerball jackpot is now up to 400 million for Wednesday's drawing and could go higher. WHLM's Cathy Clark tells us it's possible the jackpot could be pushed higher with brisk ticket sales--- that happened back in November. Pennsylvania Lottery Director Todd Rucci says sales had already basically doubled for Saturday's $300 - million dollar drawing and they're expecting increased sales to continue. Even though no one hit on Saturday-- one ticket for the multi state game sold in PA was worth one million dollars.
State Representative Karen Boback who represents Benton and Benton Township... plus most of Wyoming and Luzerne County's... is holding a series of Senior Expos over the next couple of weeks. The first one this Thursday at the Banks Student Life Center on the Misericordia University campus in Dallas. A second senior event takes place August 22nd at the Triton Hose Company in Tunkhannock.
State police say a 49 – year old man was stuck and killed while sitting on Route 239 near Shickshinny... in Union Township over the weekend. Wayne Burnside was struck by the car early Sunday morning driven by 42 – year old John Kalinas. Burnside was rushed to Geisinger – Wyoming Valley were he died. Authorities say they're still investigating the fatal accident.
Wilkes – Barre Shooting
Still no suspect in the shooting of 19 – year old William Uggiano of Wilkes – Barre. He was shot five times late Saturday night on Wayne Street... south of Grant. Uggiano was rushed to Geisinger – Wyoming Valley Medical Center... where he's being treated. No word from police what sparked the shooting.
It's going to be built to last 50 – years.... PennDOT telling us that construction on a new Zaners Bridge in Greenwood Township should begin next week. The current 25 foot span has been in place since 1940... and it classified as structurally deficient. The bridge carriers Zaners Bridge Road over a tributary to Green Creek... a short distance east of the intersection with Route 254 and Rohrsburg Road.
Bloomsburg University has a new head wrestling coach. He's Jason Mester, a graduate of Central Michigan University where he was a two time All American. Mester says he's looking forward to the start of the wrestling season. Last season, Mester was an assistant at Central Michigan. In the two seasons prior to that one, he was an assistant at Missouri. He replaces John Stutzman who was named the head coach at the University of Buffalo in May.
Major League baseball lowered the boom on 13 players implicated in a drug scandal. Twelve of those players accepted 50 game suspensions. The only player who appealed his suspension was Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez who is facing a 211 game suspension starting this Thursday. Rodriguez was in the Yankees lineup last night in Chicago and he got a chilly reception. In the end... Chicago defeated the Yankees 8 to 1.
The Philadelphia Phillies open a three game home series against the Chicago Cubs Tuesday night. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30.
