Bloomsburg Town Hall
If you've driven by Bloomsburg Town Hall the past couple of days... you've probably taken a look at a heavy duty lift being used by a crew to take a look at the exterior of the building. Loose bricks were discovered in a chimney over the police department and on the Lightstreet side of the 100 – year old structure. Town Administrator Bill Lowthert says the area's in question aren't in danger of collapsing. Mr. Lowthert says town hall is in pretty good shape despite the foot traffic it gets on a daily basis... calling the latest check of the exterior “preventative maintenance.”
Bloomsburg could be in line to receive up to $3 – million dollars in Community Development Block Grant money... due to the floods of 2011. During a public hearing at Town Hall Thursday.... Bill Seigel of Lewisburg – based SEDA – COG.. outlined the 15 projects that are priorities to bring flood control to neighborhoods. Seigel said Bloomsburg is in a pretty good position to have it's applications approved and thus.. get the money. The proposed projects include the widening of Ft. McClure Boulevard to the relocation of Snyder's Run. All the paperwork must be into the State Department of Commerce and Economic Development by the 23rd of the month.
The Bridges of Luzerne County
Sixteen bridges in Luzerne County could soon see new weight restrictions because there isn't any money to repair the spans. On the list... a bridge on Dump Hill Road over Nescopeck Creek in Nescopeck Township... as well as a bridge on Main Road... over a branch of Shickshinny Creek in Union Township. State Transportation Secretary Barry Schoch says the bridge will be posted later this month.
Ice Cream & Cake Festival
Hundreds of people turned out for last night's 56th annual Cake and Ice Cream Festival at the Bloomsburg Town Park. The event was the culmination of mid-summer activities... which have been going on since 1957. Just in the nick of time.... the weather turned nice.... leading to a simply wonderful evening at the town park... as the crowd listened to the Catawissa Military Band under the leadership of Jessica Martz.
Bloomsburg High School Junior... and local Teen Star winner... Dante Green nearly made it to prime time television. Dante traveled to New York on Thursday for further audition to appear on the NBC Television show “The Voice.” Unfortunately he didn't make the cut. But despite the set back... Dante says auditioning is not really nerve wracking. The producers of “The Voice” continues their auditioning process for the upcoming 2013 – 2014 television season...
A Hazleton man was found dead inside his home in the 400 block of Anchor Street this week. 65 – year old Darrell Brenner did not come outside his home often. Authorities first believed there was something suspicious about Brenner's death... but later ruled the man died of natural causes.
It allegedly happened between 2007 and 2009... now state police have filed charges against three members of the Harveys Lake Municipal Authority. Authority chief Richard Boice... his son, Jason... and secretary Denise Sult are accused of using Authority money to purchase personal items. All face a hearing next month.
Three outs away from a tough-luck loss, the San Francisco Giants made a winner of Matt Cain with a two-run rally against Philadelphia Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon. Cain tossing eight innings of one-run ball... and defeating the Phillies 2 to 1. The Phil's now move on to their weekend series with the Atlanta Braves at Citizens Bank Park. Pocono / Sprint Cup
It's the biggest sporting event this weekend in Pennsylvania... and it's in our own backyard. The stars and cars of the NASCAR Cup Series return to the Pocono Raceway. This Sunday it's the GoBowling.com 400 at the three corner, 2-and-a-half-mile tricky triangle. Jeff Gordon won the event a year ago. Qualifying begins at 3:10 this afternoon... followed by the ARCA Racing Series ModSpace 125.
