Water Valve Replacement

More overnight work to replace an underground water valve is scheduled for Wednesday morning. This time... at the intersection of Main and Iron Streets in Bloomsburg where water has been seeping to the surface... necessitating the repair work on the six inch diameter line. United Water's Bob Manbeck says the work will begin at 2 O'clock and should be buttoned up six hours later. Mr. Manbeck says water service won't be shut down completely... but it will be sporadic between Main and Market Streets until the end of the morning commute.

 

Scott Twp. Comprehensive Plan

Scott Township government has launched a survey for residents. Township Secretary Eric Stahley says it's an opportunity for folks to tell supervisors what direction the township should take. There are two ways to fill out the comprehensive survey.... either go on – line... or stop by the Township building on Tenny Street to pick up a copy of the survey.

 

Mainville Sportsman

Rifles and handguns have been in the news lately... for the damage they can cause in the hands of the wrong person. But for the members of the Mainville Sportsman Club... it's some what different. They plan to have an open house at the club on August 10th making all of us aware of what the club does. The open house at the Mainville Sportsman Club begins at 8 AM on August 10th... and includes a yard sale and a Chinese auction.

 

Bill Scranton

The man who was Pennsylvania Governor from 1963 to 1967 has died. Former Governor William Scranton died over the weekend in Santa Barbara, California. Franklin and Marshall College professor Terry Madonna says Mr. Scranton was a moderate Republican who could reach across party lines. In addition he was nearly drafted as the Republican Party's presidential candidate in 1964 over Barry Goldwater.... and served as Ambassador to the United Nations during the Gerald Ford years. Mr. Scranton was at the family's property in California when he died at the age of 96. He'll be cremated there... with services to be announced.

 

Millard Senor Expo

State Representative David Millard is holding his annual Senior Expo on Wednesday, August 7th at the Espy Fire Company in Scott Township. As in year's past... folks from state and local government will be there talking about programs being offered to seniors. Vendors will also be on hand offering their goods and services. It begins at 9 AM... August 7th and runs through noon time.

 

Hazleton Stabbing

A Hazleton man is in custody after he was accused of stabbing a man near a bar early Monday morning. Police say 23 – year old Jonathan Vasquez – Liriano was arrested as he left King's Lounge in the 500 block of West Broad Street... after allegedly stabbing Elbin Sanchez. Now... Vasquez – Liriano is in the Luzerne County Correctional facility.

 

Turnpike Tolls

If you use the Pennsylvania Turnpike... you'll be digging deeper into your pocket to pay tolls. The turnpike commission says cash customers will be paying 12 % more for trips... while E-Z Pass holders will only see a two percent increase. The new tolls go into effect January 5th of next year.

 

BU Project

If you plan on trying to enter the Bloomsburg University campus at the Swisher Circle entrance... you'd better find another way. Barricades were put up Monday closing the road through the end of the week so a paving project can be undertaken. BloomUtoday.com is reporting the entire project renovation project should be wrapped up by the middle of August.

 

Elysburg Fire 

We probably won't know until the end of the week as to what sparked a fire in a storage building Sunday at Vic's Transmission in Elysburg. Fire investigators spent Monday combing through the building... trying to find clues. The fire destroyed two cars parked in the building... as well as spare automobile parts. No one was injured... and the value of the damage as not been estimated.

PHL Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies had Monday off to collect their thoughts after losing their last eight games. The Phil's hope to get back on the winning track Tuesday night... when they take on the San Francisco Giants at Citizens Bank Park. You can catch all the action starting with the pre – game show at 6:30 on the WHLM Stations.

 

Other Action

On other games from Monday night... the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 9 to 2... the New York Mets just got by the Miami Marlins 6 to 5. The New York Yankees had the night off, but start a series with the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday night.

 

Pocono / NASCAR Cup

For the second time in six weeks the NASCAR Cup Series returns to the Pocono Raceway for Sunday's GoBowling.com 400. Jeff Gordon is the defending race winner. The Sprint Cup haulers pull into the track early Friday morning... with the first on – track action at 11 O'clock.
