I-81 School Bus Crash
Interstate 81 is back open... following a crash involving a school bus and a tractor – trailer. It happened shortly before 11 O'clock Friday morning when an 18 – wheeler... collided with the rear of the big, yellow bus near the McAdoo exit... in Hazel Township. Dozens of people were rushed to the hospital for treatment... or simply to be checked out. Hunlock Creek Fire
A Hunlock Creek man is dead... after a fire broke out at his home on Hartman Road in Hunlock Township Thursday afternoon. 54 – year old Kent Brace was found inside his home. The fire was first spotted when it broke through the back of the two story home. Brace was suffering from terminal pancreatic cancer. Now... a state police fire marshal will try and figure out what caused Thursday's fire in Hunlock Township.
Berwick firemen were called out early Friday morning. They responded around 3:20 this morning with a report of a possible structure fire with entrapment in the 300 block of East 6th Street. The incident turned out to be a smoldering couch fire. Members of the Defenders and Reliance fire companies took care of the situation... and were back in their quarters shortly after 4 O'clock Friday morning.
Fire investigators are expected to be at the scene of a fire in Delano Township... near McAdoo in neighboring Schuylkill County... trying to figure out what started at blaze in the former American Cable Recycling Plant. The blaze broke out Thursday morning... with firemen attacking flames from the exterior of the building. Also... water has to be trucked to the scene and transferred to portable ponds. No one was injured in that spectacular fire near McAdoo.
Police patrols of the Odd Fellows Cemetery near Danville will be stepped up... now that 40 flags on the graves of veterans were desecrated. It's the second time in a month the flags have been damaged... so says Montour County Veterans Affairs Director Doug Resseguie. He told our media partner... Newswatch 16... that in the latest case of vandalism... an estimated 26 flag poles were destroyed and the flags missing.
It is expected to be a busy weekend for a team of cops who check for suspected DUI drivers in Columbia and Montour Counties. Checkpoint Coordinator... Sgt. Leonard Rogutski from the Bloomsburg Police Department says weekend dates are selected at random. If you plan on using Route 11, 487 and 42 in Columbia County... as well as Route 54 in Montour County after sunset... you might run into a DUI checkpoint.
When the legislature ended it's session at the end of June... there were still a lot of issues to be decided upon.... such as legislation dealing with transportation. However, don't fret... according to State Representative David Millard of Berwick. It could be taken care of in short order. Right now, lawmakers are working behind the scenes to find funding for any of the transportation bill versions which may spring up this fall.
The early Thursday morning work to replace a valve on an 8 inch in diameter water main at the corner of East and Main Streets went off without a hitch. The work began before dawn Thursday... and by 9 O'clock the job to replace the several hundred pound valve had been completed more smoothly than their first valve replacement earlier this week. It was Tuesday morning... Manbeck said the crew had a pipe break in the trench. Before proceeding with the work... the area had to be cleared of water.
It won't be long until the Hotel Sterling on Market Street in Wilkes – Barre will just be a memory. Crews began demolishing the massive building on Thursday. It's expected to take a demolition company an estimated 2 months to tear down the building... and make the site level... for the next development. The City of Wilkes – Barre is paying $419,000 for the demolition project.
Pennsylvania policymakers may want to pick up some tips from a new report looking into the ways states deal with cities on the brink of financial collapse. A new Pew Charitable Trust report on state intervention programs for distressed cities suggests proactive programs would have success where Pennsylvania's reactive program hasn't. The commonwealth's Act 47 program has been likened to a type of Roach Motel - 27 cities and municipalities have checked in, only six have checked out. A spokesman with The Pew Charitable Trusts, says Pennsylvania could follow the example of other states with commissions to keep an eye on their cities before they're in crisis.
The Bloomsburg University Athletic Department will hold a retirement dinner for former head football coach Danny Hale on Saturday September 7th at the Caldwell Consistory. The event will begin with a social at 6 O'clock followed by dinner at 6:30. Tickets will cost $50 with a portion of the proceeds going to athletic scholarships. Tickets will be on sale August 1st on the Huskies website. Fans will also have the option of purchasing both a dinner and discount ticket to the Huskies game against Stonehill that afternoon at Redman Stadium.
