The Heat Goes On
It appears we're in for one more day of hot weather. Columbia and Montour Counties... as well as the northeast will have only one more day of temperatures in the 90's. National Weather Service forecaster Bob Oravec says relief is in sight thanks to a cold front sweeping through the region. That means temperatures dropping from the 90s to the 80s across the region... and there are showers and thunderstorms in the forecast.
Berwick Meth Busts
Berwick Police are happy they're slowly shutting down meth labs across the borough. The latest taking place earlier this week when four people were busted. Berwick Police Chief Ken Strish says the recent arrests have potential meth makers looking over their shoulder. Fred Smith... Melissa Waldron... Jaide Benninger and Samuel Konrad were arrested and are all facing a long list of drug charges. All are lodged in the Columbia County Prison.
Governor Corbett has signed legislation that should make it harder to cook up a batch of meth. You already have to show an ID to buy certain cold medicines because they are ingredients for the drug. Now... the sponsor of the bill... State Representative Marguerite Quinn... says the new law will target those sales even more directly. It will keep a real – time tracking system to prevent anyone from purchasing more than 9 grams a month of certain drugs. Representative Quinn says the law will help prevent the manufacturing of meth while still allowing law – abiding citizens access to their medicines.
Funeral services will be held Friday in Elysburg for a Ralpho Township volunteer firemen who died in a two vehicle crash last weekend along Route 54. 27 – year old Brian Stanley died when his pick – up was hit head on by a second truck driven by a Shamokin man. Assistant Chief Al Knerr telling our media partner... NewsWatch 16 that Stanley will be missed. Friday's service begin at 11 O'clock at the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church in Elysburg.
Steam Electric Station
The Susquehanna Steam Electric Station in Salem Township... north of Berwick... has made the list of 38 plants in 23 states at risk of early retirement. That word coming from the Vermont – based Institute of Energy and the Environment. The institute reviewing eleven risk factors which checks several benchmarks. In response... Pennsylvania Power and Light says the plant is thirty years old... and it's not closing.
Hazleton City Council has decided to hire a full – time police officer... the third one since April. Now... Councilman Vice President Keith Bast is raising a red flag... wanting to know who will continue paying the salary of Richard Hutnick when temporary revenue sources run out. Right now... the city is paying the new hires with $157,000 received when Luzerne County's former tax collection agency shut down.
The investigation is continuing into the death of a Port Carbon man... in neighboring Schuylkill County... early Thursday morning. Police say 40 – year old Sean Malone was struck and killed by a tractor – trailer on Route 209 near North Anderson Street. The driver of the 18 – wheeler telling investigators Malone was crouched over in the middle of the road and unable to avoid him.
You won't find a Kulpmont Police officer on the street's until a problem... dealing with insurance... is worked out. The borough council shutting down the department Thursday... parking their cruisers and cops out of a job temporarily. Now... the borough will received law enforcement protection from Pennsylvania State Police.
A Hazleton man will spend the next 18 months in prison. 57 – year old Joseph Yesvetz was found guilty of filing a false claim meant to help those dealing with work – related health injuries. He filed the claim for his father who died in 2001... then collected the money. In addition to the jail time... he must pay 150 – thousand dollars in restitution.
Baseball Friday Night
Major League baseball returns Friday night with a full schedule of games following the All Star break. The Phillies are in New York for the start of a three game weekend series against the Mets. Coverage of the game on the WHLM Stations will follow our live coverage of Danville's Iron Heritage Festival parade.
In other major league games Friday night, the Pirates play at Cincinnati... and the Yankees renew their rivalry with the Red Sox in Boston.
Alex Rodrigez was 1-4 in his debut with the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Railriders Thursday night. That one hit was a two run homer that helped the Railriders beat the Louisville Bats 8-0 at PNC Field. Rodriguez, who is rehabbing from hip surgery, hopes to rejoin the Yankees as soon as Monday.
Round two of the British Open Golf Championship is underway in Muirfield, Scotland. Zach Johnson shot a 66 for the first round lead.
