A Berwick woman will be arraigned today... after she allegedly stabbed her roommate Wednesday. Berwick police tell us the incident happened in an apartment in the 700 block of Green Street. 28 – year old Siesha Lane allegedly stabbed 27 – year old Jamillah Hutt with a big butcher knife. Police weren't told of the stabbing until Hutt was airlifted to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Lane was arrested and charged with aggravated assault... and reckless endangerment.
Spiffing up areas of Berwick is part of the quest of the Berwick Blue Print Committee, which met Wednesday night at the Reliance Fire Hall on Third Street. Since 2009... they've been helping LaSalle Street residents reclaim their neighborhood.... now it's time for folks living east of the BIDA Complex to do the same. Community organizer Jay Jarrett says they're getting much needed help from Bloomsburg University. Their task is to survey area residents running from Third Street... north on Mulberry to Ninth Street... west to Oak.... then south to Front Street.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health has given Geisinger Health Systems a $110,000 grant for brain cancer research. The money earmarked into the research of targeted treatment with Human Glioblastoma... so says Dr. Nikolaos Tapinos. One of the criteria in awarding the grants... the research must focus on specific research priorities established by the PA Department of Health and a panel made up of university and research institutes.
This weekend in Danville... the Borough's annual Iron Heritage Festival... celebrating the area as the first producer of iron rails used by the railroads to build the nation. The event begins Friday afternoon... with the annual parade stepping off at 7 O'clock on Mill Street. There will be plenty of things to do Saturday... with train and buggy rides... plus hundreds of vendors. The event continues Sunday with a variety of activities... including a fly – in at the airport in Riverside. A Benton man is dead after his car collided with a logging truck in the back mountain area of Dallas Township... in Luzerne County. Authorities say 76 – year old Galen Waltman of Benton apparently went through a stop sign at the intersection of Lake Street and Carpenter Road... slamming into the truck. Funeral services have not been announced for the one – time bookbinder at the former Haddon Craftsman plant in South Center Township.

Police are still trying to figure out what led to a Northumberland County teenage girl to lose control of her car on Snydertown Road. 18 – year old Marcelle Barber died... and three of her friends were injured. Police say Barber lost control of her car early Tuesday morning... and it flipped over. Barber graduated from Mt. Carmel High School last month. She was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.
Hazleton Police are asking your help in solving more than a dozen crimes which remain open so far this year. Police Chief Frank DeAndrea say they include stabbings... beatings... robberies and shootings. DeAndrea cites the beating of A.J. Goryl... left for dead on a city street... as well as shootings on West Diamond Avenue... and a stabbing at Alter and 15th Streets.
The string of convenience store stick – ups continues in Hazleton. Police say a knife – wielding man strolled into the Pantry Quick on East Diamond Avenue Tuesday night. He pulled the knife on the clerk... and ran out the door with a wad of cash. If you have information about the robbery... call Hazleton Police.
Fans of the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Rail Riders will get to see New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez in uniform Thursday night as the RailRiders take on the Louisville Bats at PNC Field. The Yankees third baseman is rehabbing, trying to return to the major leagues after a second hip operation. Rodriguez, who will turn 38 in less than two weeks, will likely play for Scranton-Wilkes Barre this entire weekend. He could return to the Yankees on Monday.
Major League baseball's regular season starts back up Friday following the All Star break. The Philadelphia Phillies open a series against the Mets in New York. At the break, the Phils are 48 and 48 and in third place in the National League East. They trail the second place Washington Nationals by one-half game and the first place Atlanta Braves by six and a half games.
The 142nd British Open Golf Tournament began this morning in Muirfield, Scotland. Ernie Els is the defending champ. Tiger Woods is hoping for his first major tournament victory since 2008.
