A former counselor for a Millville – area camp is facing sex assault charges after allegedly forcing a hearing – impaired 16 – year old girl to preform sex acts... then sexually assaulting her. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Tuesday's edition. 20 – year old Karisa Zapotocky pulled the Camp Hero guest from her bed in the middle of the night two years ago and led the teen to a shower where the alleged attack occurred. Camp Hero is a part of Camp Victory. A police report said Zapotocky initially denied the accusations. She's free... not having to post the $25,000 bail... and faces a hearing this week.
Locust Twp. Bust
A rural Catawissa man is behind bars after he was busted for having a marijuana growing operation at his home. Locust Township police say 53 – year old Richard Zambor was arrested following a three year investigation. When authorities entered the home on Mill Road near Numidia Monday... there was the unmistakable smell of marijuana... with the plants growing indoors and outdoors. Police seizing 132 plants... $47,000 in cash... and a number of weapons. Zambor was taken into custody... and made an appearance before Magistrate Craig Long. He's currently in the Columbia County prison in lieu of $75,000 bail.
If you live in Bloomsburg... you heard the fire siren go off at midday Monday. The reason... the Danville Fire Department calling for Bloomsburg's ladder truck after a blaze broke out in a fifth floor in the Bush Pavilion on the Geisinger Medical Center campus in Danville. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in today's edition... workers accidentally started a fire when sparks from welding went into the wall of the room. No one was hurt and damage was minimal.
Suspected Thieves Identified
The one university – aged student is making the rounds on video tape... accused of taking money from a Bloomsburg business has been identified. Police ID'ed the one suspect as Connor Gavin... a BU Student from East Stroudsburg. Gavin and a 17 – year old juvenile... allegedly took an estimated $600 in cash from Franks Pizzeria on East Main Street earlier this month. Both were caught on surveillance video opening the cash register and snagging the money.
Voter ID Trial
Trial got underway Monday in the state's Commonwealth Court on the constitutionally of Pennsylvania's voter ID Law. The final ruling could come down as to whether or not we need to show identification at the polls when voting. Columbia County Chief Registrar Matt Repasky is closely watching the case. 9 days have been blocked out for the trial... but whatever decision is made... the entire issue is expected to end up in the hands of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
The National American Red Cross is putting on a push for all type of blood products. That request is being felt at the local level... so says Suzanne Norton of the Bloomsburg Chapter. There are at least a dozen blood drives scheduled for the next two weeks in our area. Ms. Norton says donating is quite simple and takes an hour of your time. One very important drive is scheduled for Tuesday at the Columbia Mall in Buckhorn. That drive begins at 8 AM and runs through 1 O'clock.
Hazle Twp Accident
There is an on-going investigation into a three – vehicle crash in Hazle Township late Monday afternoon. State Police say one of the cars involved flipped onto it's roof after the collision on Church Street near a mall. 21 – year old Marlenne Ramirez Perez of Hazleton was transported to Hazleton General Hospital for evaluation. No word on who will be charged in the accident.
West Hazleton Upgrades
Council members in West Hazleton Borough say they'll apply for a $100,000 grant designed at spiffing up the Fifth Street Playground. The grant applications will be sent to the state Department of Community Affairs... and requires a 20% matching grant from the borough. Items to be upgraded include playground equipment... lighting and electrical... and the installation of a security camera system.
The calendar has been circled... and it appears July 25th is the day the Hotel Sterling in Wilkes – Barre will meet the wrecking ball. Luzerne – based Brdaric Excavating won the demolition contract at $419,000. Still to be determined... what streets are going to have to be closed for the project.
Bloomsburg University has announced its 2013 athletic Hall Of Fame Class. The five individuals that will be inducted are Amy Linn, an outstanding soccer goalkeeper from the class of 1996... men's soccer standout Neil Stoddart from the class of 1999... Patty Burns, an All American swimmer who graduated in 1995... basketball star Mike Ellzy, A 2000 grad who is the school's all time leading scorer... and Evan Rosen, a three time tennis All American who graduated in 1997. The Hall of Fame dinner will be Friday, November 1st in the Kehr Union Ballroom on campus.
The Phillies are going to be without two key starting players until September. Center fielder Ben Revere has a broken foot. He and first baseman Ryan Howard are out 6-8 weeks.
All – Star Game
Pitcher Cliff Lee and outfielder Dominic Brown will represent the Phils at tonight's All Star game at Citi Field In New York. The Mets Matt Harvey will be the starting pitcher for the National League. The American League starter will be the Tigers' Max Scherzer.
And the winner of the annual Home Run Derby last night is Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland Athletics. He slammed 32 home runs in the long ball competition.
Penn State / UCF
Penn State will open its 2014 football season against the University of Central Florida in Dublin, Ireland. It is the first international game for either team. Officials from both schools along with the Gaelic Athletic Association says the game will be played August 30th, 2014.
