Bloomsburg Town Council
Bloomsburg Town Council is up to full – strength as of Monday night... following the resignation last month of long – time Mayor Dan Knorr. Now... Carey Howell has taken his place... and apparent Mayor – elect Sandy Davis is taking over Howell's council seat. Ms. Davis won the Democratic primary for mayor in a three way race earlier this year... and was the top write - in vote – getter on the Republican ticket. She will take over the top spot on Town Council early next year.
The long – time owner of the Berwick Theatre on Front Street has passed. Vincent DiAugustine purchased the theater... then known as “The Strand...” back in 1957. That's 56 – years in the local movie business... keeping folks happy and not raising admission prices since the late 80's. His other business was running a formal wear shop next to the theater... as well as selling memorabilia.
A way to save money in the long – run. As we first told you late last week... the Columbia and Montour County Commissioner's will soon look at ways to consolidate services of local government agencies. Consolidation first became top of mind when the Commissioners toured the Columbia County Jail... so says Commission Chairman Chris Young. Also to be studied under a consolidation plan would be 911 dispatch services and transportation. Columbia County Comissioners have already okayed a plan for a study... with Montour County lawmakers expected to take up the issue when they meet this week.
As we first told you Monday... a man apparently determined to take his own life... shut down the Market Street Bridge linking South Center Township and Mifflinville for two hours. 47 – year old Wayne Shiffer was first discovered with his legs dangling over the bridge... and it took police a couple of hours to get him off the span. The Press – Enterprise is reporting when Shiffer was just about to enter his home near Old Berwick Road and Market when he was tackled by South Center Township Police Chief Bill Reichendrfer. Shiffer was hustled off to the township police station then to the Geisinger – Bloomsburg Hospital for evaluation.

A 19 – year old Berwick man admitted in Columbia County Court on Monday... he broke the leg of his 2 – month old daughter when she wouldn't stop crying. Andrew Hess now could face up to 7 years in prison on charges for assault and endangering the welfare of a child. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Tuesday's edition the incident happened at a mobile home park in North Center Township. Hess has already served eight months in the Columbia County Prison. No date has been set for Hess' sentencing.
If you're headed out on the highway this week... you'll be paying less for gasoline. The latest Triple A Fuel Gauge report shows self – serve, unleaded regular is averaging $3.39 – a - gallon across northeastern Pennsylvania. More in some locations.... less at others. That's down a penny from the weekend.... and the same price as it was a week ago.
Still no suspect in custody in connection with the theft of money raised for the family of a McAdoo girl who died in a fire last month. 6 – year old Madison Arner died in the fire... her family lost everything... but during a fund raiser over the weekend... someone walked away with a bag containing an estimated $1,000 in cash. At one time... cops believed they had a possible suspect... but that person has been cleared in the theft.
Fire investigators are still not quite sure what caused an early Monday morning fire in Pottsville... in neighboring Schuylkill County. Firemen were called out around midnight Sunday... when smoke was seen pouring out of the home on West Fairview Street It's not believed anyone was living in the structure.
If you're a UGI Penn Natural Gas customer... you're monthly bill is about a third lower than it was five years ago. It's due to gas being extracted in the Marcellus Shale fields. That's despite a small bump in the rate June 1st. And even with another increase expected later this year.... natural gas prices remain competitive.
In the first game of their four game home series against the Washington Nationals last night... the Phils defeated the Nat's 3 to 2. The second game of the series is tonight with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30.
In other games...
The Oakland Athletics downed the Pittsburgh Pirates 2 to 1.... the Kansas City Royals defeated the New York Yankees 5 to 1... and it took 16 innings... but the New York Mets finally got by the San Francisco Giants 4 to 3.
Phillies' slugger Ryan Howard needs surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee and will miss at least 6 to 8 weeks. An MRI Monday confirmed the tear in his knee. A date for surgery has not been set.
