Columbia and Montour County Commissioners are looking at ways to combine some services... such as in the areas of 911 dispatch.... prisons and transportation. For both governing bodies.... it's somewhat a fight for survival as services are expanded... and dollars become short. During their meeting this week... Columbia County Commissioners says they'll seek out a firm, which will look into area's of concern... with a first report due back to the counties in the first quarter of next year.
The Fourth of July on the square in Millville. There is no other place to be. Bands... folks on floats and thousands of people lining the street for the 84th annual Millville Fire Company Independence Day parade. The parade lasted more than two hours with folks migrating towards the carnival grounds for a fun – filled day of entertainment.
The Catawissa Military Band entertained the folks who came to celebrate the Fourth of July. With temperatures in the 80's... it was a perfect night for thousands of people to remember the nation's 237th birthday. Then.... attention turned to the soccer field for the annual fireworks display. A thirty minute show pleased the crowd... not only in the park... but lined up along South Market Street where folks watched the display by sitting in their lawn chairs. This year's display financed with a $10,000 donation by the Press – Enterprise... when it appeared the town... or the town park improvement association couldn't come up with the money for a show.
A Hazleton woman is facing a host of charges after she allegedly attacked an emergency room nurse. Police say Terri Krouse was arrested after the attack at Hazleton General Hospital. Krouse is alleged to have bit and scratched the nurse... as well as pulling out some hair in the hospital's emergency room early Thursday morning.
It is not a good holiday weekend for six people. They were burned out of their Hazleton home when a fire destroyed a double house on West Fifth Street Thursday. The incident happened midday. When firemen arriving within minutes of the alarm.. but they couldn't find enough water to squelch the flames. All the residents of the home... including a mother and her three kids made it out... but it appears a cat died in the flames.

Two people were treated for gunshot wounds following a shootout this week in Rice Township... north of Hazleton. It all began with a trespassing complaint when Nicholas Drust and his father, Robert, were questioned by property owners. That's when Robert Drust punched 75 – year old Larry Papach in the face... leading to a shoot out. Nicholas Drust fired more than a dozen rounds... hitting Papach in the shoulder and hand. Papach returned fire... hitting Robert Drust once. Now... Nicholas Drust is in the Luzerne County Correctional Center on $100,000 bond.
An 18 – year old Crestwood High School graduate will appear soon in Luzerne County Court. Richard Seiwell is accused of writing threats... leading to two evacuations of Crestwood high school earlier this year. He remains free on $25,000 bail while awaiting a formal arraignment scheduled for September.
Bloomsburg University athletic teams are now part of the largest NCAA conference in the country. Pitt-Johnstown and Seton Hill recently joined the PSAC which now has 18 member schools. In football, Seton Hill joins the PSAC's Western Division while Lock Haven moves to the East. Pitt-Johnstown does not have football. In men's and women's basketball, Seton Hill and Pitt-Johnstown join the Western Division with Lock Haven moving to the East.
The Phillies beat the Pirates Thursday afternoon in Pittsburgh taking the weekend series two games to one. Friday night, the Phils begin a ten game homestand leading up to the All Star break. They will play the Atlanta Braves with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30.
