Columbia County Commission

The Columbia County Commissioners are expected to talk about consolidation of some services with Montour County lawmakers when they meet Wednesday afternoon. First up... according to Commissioner Dave Kovach... the possible merging of Columbia and Montour County emergency dispatch. Other area's to be looked at for consolidation include prison operations and transportation.  Wednesday's meeting begins at 2 O'clock in the Commissioner's meeting room on First Street in Bloomsburg.

 

Sobriety Checkpoints

It's going to be a busy holiday weekend for area police officers. They'll be establishing sobriety checkpoints over the next few days in an effort to snag folks driving under the influence. David Everly.. a regional DUI enforcement coordinator out of Pottsville... says the checkpoints are usually set up on some of the area's busiest highways... such as Routes 11 and 487 in Columbia County.... and Route 54 near Danville.

 

Bear in the Park

Police in Benton are confronted with something they don't see everyday. A bear wandered into the Benton Town Park adjacent to Fishing Creek. Radio reports from the scene indicated the bear's appearance Tuesday afternoon drew first responders to the scene... as well as hundred's of spectators.

 

Boy Hit by Car

A 7 – year old Berwick youngster was rushed to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville late Tuesday afternoon... after he was struck by a car at the corner of Market and 9th Streets. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Wednesday's edition that Owen Wright of Mulberry Street was running with a companion when the child stopped... but little Owen continued into Market... struck by a car driven by Lisa Angell of Berwick. The youngster was initially treated at the scene by EMT's... and taken to Geisinger for further treatment.

 

Scott Twp. Wreck

A late model Pontiac was substantially damaged... and a utility poll snapped in half due to a one car crash Wednesday afternoon at the corner of Route 11 and Tenny Street in Scott Township. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Wednesday's edition... the unidentified man apparently fell asleep at the wheel while eastbound on Route 11. The driver was initially treated by medics... then rushed to a local hospital.

 

Dog Fighting

Hazleton Police... as well as the Luzerne County District Attorney's office are investigating reports of dog fighting. Police Chief Frank DeAndrea says dead or injured dogs have been showing up on city streets. It's believed the dog fighting is somehow associated with illegal gambling.

 

Wilkes – Barre Drugs

An abandoned warehouse in Wilkes – Barre was the target of State and local drug agents Tuesday afternoon. The Blackman Street building was searched for items dealing with drug manufacturing... and drug distribution. Right now... authorities are looking for the people who used the abandoned building in Wilkes – Barre.

 

Martin's Wallet

The Wyoming Valley is known as the Valley with the Heart. That became apparent Tuesday for entertainer Steve Martin. He was in Wilkes – Barre for a performance Tuesday night. Earlier in the day he lost his wallet while riding his bicycle, but it was discovered by an unnamed man who returned it to Martin through the Kirby Center box office.

 

Shamokin Building

Demolition could begin this week to tear down an abandoned double home in the 6 – hundred block of West Spruce Street in Shamokin. The home partially collapsed earlier this week... many believe due to heavy rain. More damage occurred to the structure Tuesday. Authorities say at least one person had to be evacuated from her home.

 

Mortar Round

Cops were crawling all over a home in the 600 block of Sunbury Street in Shamokin this week. The reason... State Police and a special operations squad trying to defuse a World War Two Japanese mortar round and fuses in the apartment at 619 East Sunbury St. Authorities say they did not x-ray the round to see if it was live, but placed it into a containment unit and transported it to a safe place for disposal.

PHL Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies were able to snap the Pirates nine game winning streak in Pittsburgh Tuesday night. The final... Philadelphia 3 and Pittsburgh 1. It was the first of a three game series. The Phils and Pirates tangle Wednesday night. Catch all the action starting with the pre – game show on the WHLM Stations starting at 6:30.

 

In other games Tuesday night... the New York Mets downed the Arizona Diamondbacks 9 to 1... and the New York Yankees defeated the Minnesota Twins 7 to 3.

 

No Hitter

Lightning strikes twice for Homer Bailey. The Cincinnati Reds pitcher tossed a no-hitter for the second time in 10 months last night.

 

Wimbledon

And then there were none! The last U.S. player at Wimbledon was eliminated Tuesday in the women's quarterfinals. 20 – year old Sloan Stephens lost to Marion Bartoli of Germany 6-4, 7-1.
