Columbia County Commission
The Columbia County Commissioners are expected to talk about consolidation of some services with Montour County lawmakers when they meet Wednesday afternoon. First up... according to Commissioner Dave Kovach... the possible merging of Columbia and Montour County emergency dispatch. Other area's to be looked at for consolidation include prison operations and transportation. Wednesday's meeting begins at 2 O'clock in the Commissioner's meeting room on First Street in Bloomsburg.
It's going to be a busy holiday weekend for area police officers. They'll be establishing sobriety checkpoints over the next few days in an effort to snag folks driving under the influence. David Everly.. a regional DUI enforcement coordinator out of Pottsville... says the checkpoints are usually set up on some of the area's busiest highways... such as Route 11 and 487 in Columbia County.... and Route 54 near Danville.
Bear in the Park
Police in Benton are confronted with something they don't see everyday. A bear wandered into the Benton Town Park adjacent to Fishing Creek. The bear's appearance Tuesday afternoon drew first responders to the scene... as well as hundred's of spectators.
Scott Twp. Accident
Police are investigating an accident which took place around 4:30 Tuesday afternoon. It happened at Route 11 and Tenny Street in Scott Township. There was radio report of a person being injured.
Proposed TV Deal
The landscape of local television may soon change. The Chicago – based Tribune Company wants to acquire the 16 television stations owned by a group known as Local TV. Included in the deal is our media partner... WNEP / Channel 16. Tribune says it's willing to pay $2.7 – billion dollars in cash for the properties in 16 key markets across the country. Tribune currently has 23 TV stations... including WGN in Chicago. The proposed deal could close by the end of the year, but first must pass regulatory checks and balances.
We're still under that flash flood watch issued over the weekend by the National Weather Service. Now... Folks at Columbia County Emergency Management continue to keep an eye on the levels of the Susquehanna River and Fishing Creek. But the EMA's Michelle Frye says the elimination of federal funding for rain gauges in northern PA and southern New York State really doesn't give the agency a good, overall view of what we can expect from the Susquehanna. Meantime... showers and thunderstorms continue to be a main part of the weather forecast for the remainder of the week... with the Susquehanna expected to crest just above 14.9 feet late Thursday.
Holiday Drinking & Boating
A big 4th of July holiday this week... means officers will be out looking for alleged drunk drivers... not only on the highways... but on the water as well. State conservation officer Steven Boughter says he'll be out on the Susquehanna River this weekend.... conducting safety checks... and checking for drunk boaters. Officer Boughter says BUI isn't as prevalent as it was a couple of years ago... but it does exist.
Wilkes – Barre Drugs
That drug sting in Wilkes – Barre centered in a barber shop and a furniture store... has netted 17 arrests. Nine people were originally arrested last week... now word of others arrested. All or some of the 17 people would allegedly purchase drugs in the New York City area and bring them to the Wyoming Valley for distribution. Authorities say the 20 kilos and 200 pounds of marijuana brought into the area have a street value of $2.5 - million dollars.
A 35 – year old West Hazleton man is dead following a two - car crash Monday afternoon in Luzerne County. State Police at Hazleton says Carlos Taveras – Martes... died when he lost control of his car... slamming into a second vehicle. 43 – year old Christopher Jones of Drums was hospitalized. Police say Taveras – Martes was not wearing a set belt at the time of the crash.
State revenue figures are in for June... and Pennsylvania collected $2.7 – billion dollars in general fund revenue... which was 1.7% less than anticipated. However, overall... the state rounded out the fiscal year with $28.6 – billion dollars... or two – tenths of a percent above estimates. That number was able to fund the 2012 – 2013 budget year which just ended.
After a day off the Phillies begin a three game series in Pittsburgh Tuesday night. They will be facing the hottest team in baseball. The Pirates have a record of 51-30 and they have won nine straight games. Tuesday night's first pitch will be at 7:05. Coverage on the WHLM Station begins with the pregame show at 6:30.
In major league baseball Monday night.... the New York Mets defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 5 to 4... and the New York Yankees downed the Minnesota Twins 10 to 4.
Another big upset yesterday at the Wimbledon Tennis championships. Women's favorite Serena Williams lost to Sabine Lasicki of Germany 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 in the round of 16. Williams had won 34 matches in a row. Sloane Stephens, who advanced to the women's quarterfinals with a win Monday is the only American left in the tournament.
