Interim Bloomsburg Chief

We could have an interim Police Chief in Bloomsburg in the not too distant future. During this week's Town Council meeting.... vice – chair Diane Levan says Sgt. Roger Van Loan is the candidate that council would like to see filling the shoes of retiring chief Leo Sokoloski. The major hurdle... according to Ms. Levan... is the union which represents town cops allowing Sgt. Van Loan to step away from the labor organization for the next three to four months. Van Loan has expressed interest in stepping in temporarily... but council must first figure out a compensation package. It would also allow council to launch a search for Chief Sokoloski's permanent replacement.

 

College Prof/Kiddie Porn

A Kings College professor has been arraigned on child pornography charges before a district judge in Hazle Township. 52 – year old James Stewart of Mountain Top is accused of downloading... then distributing pictures of naked children. Stewart is listed as a tutorial coordinator in academic skills according to the Kings College website.

 

Wilkes – Barre Shooting Death

A 22 - year old Wilkes – Barre man faces an involuntary manslaughter charge after accidentally shooting Zachary Williams... who later died. Brandon Switzer is now facing the charge. The incident taking place Tuesday afternoon in an apartment on North Sherman Street. The pair... plus a third man... were playing with a handgun when it went off. Switzer's bail was initially set at $250,000... but through a bail bondsman... he was released into the custody of his family.

 

Hazleton Stabbing

Another day... another stabbing in Hazleton. This time.. the incident happened around 10 O'clock last night at a home on North Wyoming Street. Authorities say one person was hospitalized after being stabbed. Police have not released the name of the victim... or say if a suspect is in custody.

 

Traveling Library

The Columbia County Traveling Library is launching a summer reading program this Saturday for pre – school and school age kids. Director Lydia Kegler says it's all about staying sharp during the summer months before heading back to school this fall. The program officially gets underway Saturday during a kick off party at Rohrbach's Farm Market on Route 487... south of Catawissa.

 

Winning Ticket

The Pennsylvania Lottery says a Cash 5 ticket sold in Ashland is worth a half million dollars. The ticket was sold at the Friendly Choice Food Mart on Centre Street... but the ticket holder has yet to come forward to claim the prize. The numbers on the ticket match all five balls drawn Saturday night.

 

Hazleton School Board Vote

Sometime within the next thirty days... there will be a new election held in Schuylkill and Carbon counties for the Hazleton area school board. Two Luzerne County judges made the ruling Tuesday. Most of the Hazleton district is within Luzerne County... but portions are also in Schuylkill and Carbon. The issue revolves around a candidate for school board who dropped out of the race, but still got more than 500 votes in the two counties since the board of election did not remove his name from the ballot.

 

LATS

If you live in eastern Northumberland County... and you looking for an inexpensive way to get to the Knoebels Amusement Resort... the Lower Anthracite Transportation System may be the answer. The system, known as LATS... is adding a third route to a six day a week schedule taking park guests and employees to Knoebels from area's such as Coal Township. The bus makes 19 stops along the way to pick up and discharge passengers.

PHL Phillies

Philadelphia's Domonic Brown's hit his first homer since June 8th, his 20th of the season, and gave the Phillies the lead, and then his RBI walk extended the cushion as the Phil's defeated the San Diego Padres 6 to 2 last night. Starter Kyle Kendrick earning the win with eight strong innings of pitching. The Phillies conclude their three game series in San Diego tonight in a game that starts at 10:10. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 9:35.

 

Other MLB Games

In other games last night... the New York Yankees defeated the Texas Rangers 4 to 3.... the Chicago White Sox downed the New York Mets 5 to 4... and the Pittsburgh Pirates outlasted the Seattle Mariners 9 to 4....

 

College World Series

In the college world series in Omaha.... the UCLA Bruins rolled over Mississippi State 8 to nothing to take their first college baseball title.
