Bloomsburg Interim Mayor
Bloomsburg has a new interim Mayor. Councilman Carey Howell was nominated and elected to the post by fellow council members Monday night. Howell will fill the unexpired term of Dan Knorr who soon begins an administrative job with Danville Borough government. Apparent Mayor – elect Sandy Davis... was selected to fill Howell's seat.... and gets an opportunity to get her feet wet in council procedures and will help prepare the budget for 2014.
Work crews will be in Hughesville... in neighboring Lycoming County on Tuesday cleaning up from a strong storm which swept through the area late Monday afternoon. Strong straight line winds accompanied by thunderstorms blew lawn furniture around... and was so strong... knocked over a big tree which blocked Broadway. Down electrical lines also forced public works crews to close streets. No injuries were reported in the strong, but powerful storm.
There is an alert posted from the Columbia – Montour Office of Aging.... beware of calls you may get requesting money to get a relative out of jail in a foreign country. Executive Director Kathy Lynn says that's the latest scam making the rounds... with many, if not all the calls, coming out of Jamaica... in the Caribbean. But, Ms. Lynn says there is something you can do about it such as calling her office so she can go to bat for you in Harrisburg. Ms. Lynn went on to say.... never give out personal information over the phone since the scammers can get into your bank account without your knowledge... and you'll never see your hard – earned money again.
Focusing on downtown Bloomsburg.... that's what Downtown Bloomsburg, Incorporated plans to do Saturday at the Caldwell Consistory. It's the highly – anticipated Brewsburg... an event featuring micro – brews from area restaurants. Appearing on the Monday edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz.... DBI manager Adrienne Mael says there will be a lot of home – grown music as well. Tickets for the event are available at the Columbia – Montour Chamber of Commerce on Market Street in Bloomsburg... as well as other establishments around the area.
A hostage situation in Lansford on Monday came to a quiet end. Police say 51 – year old Jefferey Gangaware is facing a long list of charges after holding his girlfriend hostage at his home. Bernice Moser was not injured. Gangaware is being held on $100,000 bail in the Carbon County Jail in Jim Thorpe.
McAdoo Fatal Fire
A 6 – year old McAdoo girl is dead two days after a fire swept through the family apartment. The Leigh County Coroner's Office says little Madison Arner died at the Lehigh Valley Hospital on Monday. She was one of four people pulled from the burning South Kennedy Drive building late Saturday night. The coroner's office said the child's organs will be donated. No word as to what caused Saturday night's fire in McAdoo.
A Berwick woman will spend the next 14 to 28 – years in prison following her conviction earlier this year of torching a Conyngham apartment building in 2010. 44 – year old Gail Schneider received the sentence in Luzerne County Court in Wilkes – Barre on Monday. She was convicted of torching the combination business and apartment building on Lantern Lane... a year after she was evicted. In addition to the jail time... she must pay $1.2 – million in restitution.
Police say there are no suspects in the stabbing of a 25 – year old man early Monday morning in Hazleton. The incident taking place at the corner of 15th and Alter Streets. No word as to who the victim is... but investigators were at the scene Monday trying to figure out what happened.
Gas prices across northeastern PA... including Columbia and Montour County's... remains steady. The latest Triple A Fuel Gauge report shows the price of self – serve, unleaded regular at 3-44 a gallon... the same as it was over the weekend. But, it's two cents higher from last week at this time... but three cents lower than a month ago.
A Berwick man is headed for prison... but for how long is still being determined. 26 – year old Jason Musselman troubles stem from a car jacking two years ago. Musselman recently appeared in Snyder County Court to answer to a bench warrant... eventually pleading guilty to felony flight... vehicle theft... and charges connected with an accident. Final sentencing will be handed down since he wants to get into the state intermediate punishment program.

A new PennDOT web site shows what projects could start over the next decade with additional transportation funding. The site shows three scenarios-- road and bridge projects that could be done under Governor Tom Corbett's $1.8 billion dollar plan and the state Senate's 2.5 billion dollar plan. It also shows what would happen with no additional funding. The tool allows people to see how their area could benefit from additional money. It's hoped the lawmakers will tackle the issue before the end of the week.
San Diego's Kyle Blanks singled home the game-winning run in a stunning 4-3 Padres victory in 10 innings over the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night. The Phils' series in San Diego continues Tuesday night. The first pitch will be at 10:10. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 9:35.

There were only three other games in major league baseball Monday night... the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Francisco Giants 3 to 1... the Tampa Bay Rays downed the Toronto Bluejays 4 – 1. The victory broke Toronto's 11 game win streak... and the Cleveland Indians defeated the Baltimore Orioles 5 to 2.
In the opening game of the College baseball final series in Omaha last night... UCLA topped Mississippi State 3 to 1.
In game 6 of the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup final series... the Chicago Blackhawks, on the brink of having to go home for Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals, mounted an incredible comeback and captured the franchise' fifth Cup, with a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins in Game 6 on Monday night.
