Bloomsburg has a new interim Mayor. Councilman Carey Howell was nominated and elected to the post by fellow council members Monday night. Howell will fill the unexpired term of Dan Knorr who soon begins an administrative job with Danville Borough government. Apparent Mayor – elect Sandy Davis... was selected to fill Howell's seat.... and gets an opportunity to get her feet wet in council procedures and will help prepare the budget for 2014.
A 6 – year old McAdoo girl is dead two days after a fire swept through the family apartment. The Leigh County Coroner's Office says little Madison Arner died at the Lehigh Valley Hospital on Monday. She was one of four people pulled from the burning South Kennedy Drive building late Saturday night. The coroner's office said the child's organs will be donated. No word as to what caused Saturday night's fire in McAdoo.
A Berwick woman will spend the next 14 to 28 – years in prison following her conviction earlier this year of torching a Conyngham apartment building in 2010. 44 – year old Gail Schneider received the sentence in Luzerne County Court in Wilkes – Barre on Monday. She was convicted of torching the combination business and apartment building on Lantern Lane... a year after she was evicted. In addition to the jail time... she must pay $1.2 – million in restitution.
It was a time for celebration Saturday... as dozens of Fernville residents gathered for the second anniversary of the opening of their park at Drinker and Bloom Streets. The three acre patch of land used to have homes... but they were damaged by the flood of 2006... and condemned. With the help of seed money from the Columbia County Commission... a committee turned the area into a park.
If you plan on using Iron Street... which turns into Millville Road in Bloomsburg... you might want plans to take an alternate route. Starting Monday... PennDOT through it's prime contractor... Glenn Hawbaker... will begin work to reconstruct the highway from Main Street in Bloomsburg to Mall Boulevard in Hemlock Township. Most of the time... traffic will be restricted to a single lane... with cars and trucks controlled by flagging personnel. The $793,000 contract is scheduled to be completed by mid – September.
Butler Twp Fatal
A Drums man is dead following a weekend crash in Butler Township near Hazleton over the weekend. Authorities say 42 – year old Raymond Schermerhorn was on Old Airport Road... when he lost control of his pick – up... flipping over on it's side after hitting an embankment. Two teenager inside the truck were also hurt. The crash remains under investigation.
Police in Wilkes – Barre are investigating an armed robbery of a convenience store at the corner of Parrish and Hazle Streets. Police say a man strolled into the Unimart around 9 O'clock Sunday night... pulled a weapon and asked for money. He grabbed the cash... then took off.
