Bloomsburg Chief Redies to Retire

Bloomsburg Police Chief Leo Sokoloski plans to call it a career a next Friday. It's been a long 26 – years as a town policeman... the past 13 as chief. During a recent interview... Chief Sokoloski said it was time to take a different direction with his career. The chief says the department has been able to keep major crime out of Bloomsburg. Next month... Chief Sokoloski becomes the head of security at Elizabethtown College in Lancaster County.

 

O'Brien Pay Raise

Penn State is handing out a hefty pay raise to it's head football coach. Bill O'Brien is getting a $1 – million raise after leading the Nittany Lions to an 8 and 4 record. When first hired... he contracted for a base salary of $950,000... but after the million dollar boost... it's now in the neighborhood of $1.9 - million. Counting compensation for radio and television work and a Nike contract, O'Brien's total deal this year would be worth more than $3.2 - million.

 

Milk Prices

A decision by the Pennsylvania Milk Marketing Board is raising concern in the farming community. Starting July 1st, the overall Class I premium paid for milk will drop by 83 cents- or just over 30% of the current levels paid through the over order premium and fuel adjuster add on. The Pennsylvania Farm Bureau says dairy farmers are still operating on tight profit margins and this will be real money coming out of the pockets of milk producers.

 

Gettysburg Reenactment

If you're a Civil War buff... the re-enactment of the Battle of Gettysburg begins July 4th... and runs through the holiday weekend. Eric Stahley of Columbia County's south side is a Civil War reenactor who plans to be in Adams County as part of an independent artillery battery from the Pittsburgh area... who in 1863... fought in the three day battle. An estimated 10,000 reenactors will be in Gettysburg to take part in the simulated battles... as well as thousands of spectators.

 

Magnet School Mold

A new magnet school in Hazleton is expected to open on time this fall. Renovation of the Hazleton Area Academy of Sciences on Azalea Drive in Butler township came to a halt earlier this year when mold was discovered. That issue has been cleaned up... and construction is back underway... leading to a September opening.

 

Elder Abuse

Police in Newport Township... near Nanticoke... are investigating a case of possible elder abuse. The incident came to light Thursday... when administrators at the Guardian Elder Care Center alerted police. No charges have been filed... and the alleged victim wasn't hospitalized. All at the center are cooperating with investigators.

 

New Charges

A man from the Borough of Luzerne is facing an estimated 1,700 new kiddie porn charges. Michael Shaw was already behind bars in the Luzerne County Jail when investigators filed the charges this week. Shaw has already confessed to molesting a young boy... and posting pictures of the sexual abuse on line.

 

Sex Charges Lodged

An Ashley man is in the Luzerne County Prison on child sex charges. 22 – year old Kevin Kivler was arrested following a multi – month investigation by police. Kivler is facing charges of corruption of minors... aggravated indecent assault on a child.... as well as other sex – related charges.

 

Drug Charges / Shamokin

Two Sunbury residents have been charged by Shamokin police with allegedly selling prescription drugs. 40 – year old Jennifer Wolf is in the Northumberland County prison awaiting $10,000 bail after she was arrested on a host of drug – related charges. Meantime... 46 – year old Lelo Singara posted his $10,000 bail and was released. He's facing five felony charges stemming from an incident in Shamokin two months ago.

BU Wrestling

For the second straight season, the Bloomsburg University wrestling team has been selected to participate in the "Grapple at the Garden". The Huskies will be one of 12 teams competing in the event which will be held Sunday, December 1st at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

 

PHL Phillies

After a night off, the Phillies open a weekend series tonight at home against the New York Mets. Coverage on the whlm stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30. The Mets won Thursday night, beating the Braves in Atlanta 4-3.

 

In other games...

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated Cincinnati 5-3... and the New York Yankees lost an 8-3 decision to Tampa Bay.

 

NBA

For the second consecutive season, The Miami Heat are the NBA champions. Thursday night in Game seven, LeBron James scored a game high 37 points as the Heat outlasted the San Antonio Spurs 95-88.
