Geisinger Impact

A report from The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania shows that Danville – based Geisinger Health System has an annual impact of $6.1 - billion on the local, regional and state economy. The association taking data from Geisinger hospitals in Bloomsburg, Shamokin... and Scranton and it's affiliates. The system is a major employer in northeast and Central Pennsylvania... with an estimated 19,000 on their payroll.

 

Teen Found

That massive search for a 17 – year old Marion Heights teenager is over. Makenzie Greco was discovered late Wednesday afternoon in a wood area behind the Mt. Carmel High School. Other than having a couple of cuts and bruises... Greco was in pretty good shape. If you recall... Greco went out for a run Monday night... and was caught on surveillance video prior to his disappearance.

 

Bloomsburg Bear

An unusual sight in Bloomsburg early Wednesday afternoon... a small bear wandering around the area of Iron and East Main Streets. Bloomsburg police were called... and officers initially spotted it in the area of Catherine Street. Authorities say animal crossed busy Main Street and ended up behind St. Paul's Episcopal Church. State game officers were called... arriving from Danville... and used a couple of tranquilizer darts to temporarily incapacitate the animal. The bear was placed in a cage... and taken to an area to be released. It's not known how the black, furry bear wandered into Bloomsburg.

 

Shickshinny Theft

A Shickshinny woman will find herself in Luzerne County court. 46 – year old Mary Kramer is accused of making off with an estimated $15,000 from the Northwest area Junior Football League.... the money earmarked for uniforms. She gave up her rights to a hearing on Wednesday... with a trial expected to begin in Wilkes – Barre in the not too distant future. Prosecutors says Kramer allegedly wrote checks to herself from the team's account.

 

Susquehanna Trek

There is an incredible journey being taken by a father and son as they traverse the Susquehanna River from the headwaters in New York State to the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Steven and Randy Marks of Catawissa are using paddle boards to make the trek designed to raise money for Kidsburg 2.0 in Bloomsburg and the Danville Community Center. The pair spend an average of eight hours a day on the river... with the hope of reaching the confluence of the Susquehanna and the Chesapeake Bay near Havre de Grace, Maryland by the end of the weekend.

 

Animal Cruelty

A case of animal cruelty will now be heard in Luzerne County Court. Gino Saullo gave up his right to a preliminary hearing on Wednesday after he was charged in the hanging death of his nephew's 3 – year old pit bull earlier this year. The dog's body found hanging from a dumpster in Hazle Township.

 

Hotel Sterling

We can expect to see the former Hotel Sterling in Wilkes – Barre fall to the wrecking ball within the next month or so. Bids were opened yesterday for the demolition project... and of the 14... Brdaric Execavating of Luzerne checked in with a bid of $419,000. The former hotel has been an eyesore for years... and just recently there were concerns the building could collapse.

 

Pension Reform
A State House committee heard testimony Wednesday on pension reform proposals in Harrisburg. The House State Government Committee heard from a variety of supporters and opponents of plans to overhaul the state employees pension system - a move the Corbett Administration says is necessary to avert a fiscal cliff. Budget Secretary Charles Zogby and teachers union President Michael Crossey were among the diverse voices heard from. The list also including retirement plan providers and of course, lawmakers. Governor Corbett wants a pension reform plan passed before the legislature breaks for the summer...

 

Education Funding

A new report from the Pennsylvania State Education Association supports the group's take on cuts to state education funding. PSEA President Michael Crossey blames Governor Corbett for the negative impacts on education. In it's response... the Corbett administration says the cuts in the first Corbett budget were due to the evaporation of federal stimulus money... which was added to the education line by former Governor Ed Rendell. The administration says ore state money than ever is being pumped into education.

 

WHLM Sports

Joe Brito

As we told you Wednesday... 29 - year old Joe Brito was named the new head coach this week of the Southern Columbia boys' basketball team. Brito explains the style of play he expects from his team since many are football players. Last season, Brito was a volunteer assistant for the Bloomsburg University men's team.

 

PHL Phillies

In major league baseball Wednesday night... the Washington National's defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 6 to 2. The Phils have Thursday night off. They will start a weekend series at home against the New York Mets Friday night.

 

In other major league action...

The Atlanta Braves downed the New York Mets 5 to 3... the Cincinnati Red defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 2 to 1... the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers played a double header last night.

In the first game New York out distanced L-A 6 – 4... but in the second game... Los Angeles blanked New York 6 to nothing.

 

NBA Championship

The NBA championship will be on the line Thursday night when the San Antonio Spurs play the Miami Heat in game 7 in South Florida.

 

Stanley Cup

In game four of the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup final series Wednesday night... the Chicago Blackhawks just getting by the Boston Bruins 6 to 5. The best of seven series is tied at two games apiece. The two teams face off again Saturday night.
