Berwick Man Arrested

A Berwick man is being held after he was arrested with a number of robbery-related charges stemming from earlier this month. A Berwick Police Department news release says Tanner Hess and an unnamed teenager pranked Mitchell Hummel while they were on their way home from a carnival in East Berwick earlier this month. Hess holding up the arms of Hummel while the teen went through Hummel's pockets... taking a wallet containing an estimated $350 dollars in cash. The wallet was later found near the McBride Library on Market Street.... but the money was missing.

Tanner Hess was charged Friday with criminal conspiracy to commit robbery.... unlawful restraint and criminal conspiracy to commit theft. He was arraigned in front of District Justice Rusty Lawton... with bail set at $10,000 straight cash. Hess is in the Columbia County Prison in Bloomsburg. Police say once the juvenile is found... he'll be charged with robbery, criminal conspiracy and theft.

 

Unit 2 Back on Line

Operators at the PPL Steam Electric Station in Salem Township... north of Berwick... have reconnected the Unit 1 reactor to the regional electric grid Friday. The unit coming back on line after completing improvements that will take care of turbine issues experience over the past several years. In a new release issued Friday evening... a plant spokesperson says operators will continue to monitor the performance of the turbines on both Unit 1 and 2.

 

Chief Sokoloski

Bloomsburg Police Chief Leo Sokoloski is only weeks away from retirement after serving in his position for the past 13 years.... and an officer in Bloomsburg since the mid – 8o's. During an exit interview in his office Thursday.... Chief Sokoloski said one of his proudest achievement is obtaining department accreditation. Chief Sokoloski has accepted the position of heading up campus security at Elizabethtown College in Lancaster County... a job he'll assume next month.

 

Hometown Heroes

The Bloomsburg Chapter of the American Red Cross got an opportunity Friday to honor heroes and to say thanks. In essence... according to the chapter's Rita Inklovich... an opportunity to recognize people who saved a life. Those categories honored include fire safety and law enforcement... to those folks who work in the medical field. The event held at Monty's on the Bloomsburg University Campus.

 

Woman Charged

A Shickshinny woman is in the Luzerne County prison after she was arrested and charged with allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from the Northwest Area Junior Football program. State Police say Mary Kramer allegedly made off with $15,000 from the league's uniform account. In all... authorities say Kramer signed her name to thirteen checks... and may numerous ATM withdrawals.

 

Elder Abuse

Saturday is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. That word from Kathy Lynn who runs the Columbia – Montour Office of Aging. She says elder abuse is prevalent around the world.... including in our area. Lynn says to prevent elder abuse from happening.... be sure to check in on older relatives or folks living in the neighborhood to make sure they're safe...

 

Allen Box Walk

A cabinet secretary has been shown the door but the Corbett administration is not saying why. Governor Corbett asked for and received the resignation of Richard Allan as secretary of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The change took effect Thursday. A spokesman for the Governor say its a personnel matter and he can't discuss it, other than to say it has nothing to do with any differences of public policy. Ellen Ferretti, Deputy Secretary for Parks and Forestry, will serve as acting secretary.

 

Judge Stevens Nominated

A former Luzerne County judge has been nominated to a vacancy on the State Supreme Court. Governor Corbett throwing his support behind Correale Stevens... who is from the Hazleton area. Stevens is now serving as President Judge of the State Superior Court.
