Trash to Treasure

The United Way of Columbia County's huge trash to treasure sale on the BU campus over the weekend was an unqualified success. Early Bird shopper Carla from Buckhorn said she found what she wanted a couple of minutes after the doors opened. Money raised by the United Way is used to to fund the more than a dozen non – profit member agencies in Columbia County.

 

Aggressive Driving

Police offices and departments in a five county area were honored at the start of the weekend for their enforcement of aggressive driving. PennDOT statistics show over the past 5 – years... there have been 196 arrests in Columbia County... while police in Montour County have arrested 29 drivers. But Danville Police Chief Eric Gill says even though Montour County is small.... it does have its problems such as road rage and drivers trying to get to their destination quickly... as well as drivers blowing through red lights.

 

Snyder Fatal

A Danville man with ties to the Bloomsburg area is dead following a crash in Snyder County over the weekend. State police say 42 – year old Michael Weatherill lost control of his stolen vehicle when it was southbound on US Route 11 in Monroe Township... near Shamokin Dam. The vehicle was allegedly stolen from the Buckhorn area on Saturday. Police say Weatherill was not wearing a seat belt or had a valid license when the accident occurred... and it appears speed was a factor in the wreck.

 

Front St. Work

It's been two years in the making.... and finally Berwick drivers are seeing light at the end of the tunnel.  The final section of paving on the Route 11 construction project in Berwick begins Monday. Barletta Materials and Construction will mill and pave a section between Hughes and Poplar Street. Traffic will be down to a single lane in the area... with cars and trucks controlled by flaggers. PennDOT is encouraging an alternate route around the construction project.

 

Robbery Investigation

One person is in custody, but a second person is sought by Bloomsburg Police after the pair allegedly robbed a man late last week in the ten block of East Pine Avenue. Police tells us 20 – year old Ryan Nemeth of Benton is in the Columbia County Prison on $50,000 bail on charges of robbery and aggravated assault. A second person is being sought in connection with the incident. Both are accused of demanding cash and the man's cell phone while pointing a weapon at the victim.

 

Hazleton Power

All the power in the Hazleton area is back on Monday morning... after thousands of PPL customers were in the dark early Sunday evening. The juice went out around 6 O'clock... tossing nearly 11,000 subscribers in the dark. However, within an hour... crews traced the problem to the Harwood substation and had the power back on.

 

Hazleton Shootings

Gun shots ringing out in Hazleton Saturday night. Police there aren't saying much, but what we know is that several people were fighting on West Oak Street when shots were fired. In the 500 block of West Oak... a woman was hit in the stomach... and a man found shot, as well, in the 600 block of West Diamond. The pair were flown to the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown where they're being treated.

 

Beaver Meadows

If your route of travel takes you through Beaver Meadows... south of Hazleton... it may be a slow go. PennDOT plans to start roadwork on Route 93 on Monday. Most of the day today will be spent milling Broad St. and tomorrow the operation shifts to Berwick Street. There will be parking restrictions on the area... now through Thursday.

 

Nanticoke Facility

62 residents of a personal care home in Nanticoke spent the night elsewhere after a water pipe broke... effecting the entire three story building. The incident began late Sunday afternoon when first responders were called to Nanticoke Villa after the water damaged the electrical and fire alarm systems.  All guests were taken to Nanticoke Area High Schools... then to other personal care facilities.

PHL Phillies

In major league baseball Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee, the Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Milwaukee Brewers for the third straight time, 9-1. The Phils have Monday off. Tuesday night they will open a series in Minneapolis against the Twins.

 

MLB Other Games

In other games Sunday:

The Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the Chicago Cubs 4-1... the New York Mets lost to the Miami Marlins 8-4 in ten innings... and the New York Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners 2-1.

 

NBA

Sunday night in game two of the NBA's final series last night... the Miami Heat rolled over the San Antonio Spurs 103 to 84. Game three is Tuesday night in San Antonio. The teams are tied at one game apiece.

 

NHL

The National Hockey League's championship series between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins will open Wednesday night in Chicago.

 

NASCAR Sprint Cup

And Jimmie Johnson wins Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series Party in the Poconos 400 at the Pocono Raceway in near – by Long Pond.
