Chamber / Corbett

Chamber of Commerce members from across northeastern Pennsylvania will get to sit down with Governor Corbett on Wednesday in Wilkes – Barre. Bloomsburg Chamber President Fred Gaffney says Mr. Corbett is expected to pitch his proposed budget. But chamber members have an agenda of their own... drilling the Governor on major issues impacting business... such as pension reform... uncertainty of changes in the health care program... as well as his transportation bill. That meeting with the Governor will take place at the Woodlands Inn in Wilkes – Barre.

 

Geisinger Expansion

Danville – based Geisinger Health System is expanding. This time it's in the Lackawanna Valley in Scranton. Ground was broken Monday on an $80 – million expansion for Geisinger – CMC. It's the first part of a 160 million dollar investment. Next on Geisinger's to – do list a larger intensive care unit... and 14 new operating suites.

 

Montour Fire

The cause of a Monday night barn fire in Anthony Township... in Montour County remains under investigation. A passer – by discovering the blaze in a barn owned by Ananias Hersberger at 310 PPL Road near Exchange. The fire was fueled by dry hay... and spread quickly. Firemen couldn't stop the flames despite help from firemen from Columbia and Union Counties. Also: Hershberger's horse died in the multi – alarm blaze.

 

Party in the Poconos

One of the largest sporting events in eastern PA is on tap this weekend at the Pocono Raceway for the NASCAR Cup Series Party in the Poconos 400. But despite the 125,000 people expected at the track... very little of the hotel business spills over into Columbia County. Otto Kurecian says it only happens when fans are faced with skyrocketing rates and a minimum stay of at least four nights. Also... Kurecian says many headed for Sunday's Cup Series event are day trippers.... arriving early in the morning and leaving by later afternoon.

 

May Revenue

The PA State Revenue Department collected $2 – billion in general revenue funds in May... or about $35 – million more than expected. But year to date... the state has collected $26 – billion... or about a four – tenths of a percent increase... just barely covering the current budget. Meantime... the numbers are important as state lawmakers get ready to go forward with the proposed 2013 – 2014 state budget.

 

Mega Millions Winner

State Lottery officials now say a Friday Mega Millions ticket worth $250,000 was sold in Shamokin Dam... in Snyder County. The winning ticket was sold at a Short Stop Mart at 3013 Susquehanna Trail.  Thus far, no one has claimed the winning price... and ticket holder has a year to do so. The store will receive $500 for selling the winning ticket.

 

U.S. Farm Bill
Both the U.S. House and Senate are working on massive farm bills that are expected to see action this summer. But one amendment already in the books would limit the subsidies on crop insurance. Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey says there's no defense for subsidy payments going to the richest of the rich. The cutoff would only affect about 4% of producers nationwide. The amendment will be part of the larger bill to be debated this summer - at least that's the timetable being talked about for the $100 billion bill.

 

Shamokin Infant Death

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday at the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown... stemming from the death of a 2 – month old infant. Shamokin police spent most of Monday at a home in the 300 block of Market Street after receiving a report of an unresponsive child. That's where they found Navaydius Marciniak. The child was rushed to Geisinger – Shamokin Area Community Hospital and pronounced dead.

 

Atlas Fire

For the 6th time in as many weeks... there's been a house fire in Atlas... in Northumberland County. The latest one taking place Sunday night on West Girard Street. Although the latest fire has been ruled accidental... people living along the street are worried. Thus far... four of the six fires have been ruled suspicious.

 

Danville Fire / Update

Danville firemen are trying to figure out how a blaze started on the porch of an apartment at 22 Bloom Street late Sunday night. Firemen from Danville and Mahoning Township rushed to the scene around 11:15. Two people were at home when the blaze broke out.

 

MinSec / Hazleton

The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections will not be renewing the state contract for the MinSec pre-release correctional facility on Broad Street in Hazleton. State Rep. Tarah Toohil of Hazleton said she is pleased the administration has been responsive to repeated requests from her office and local officials to close the controversial facility. The place has been the cause of many problems in downtown Hazleton and the community. The final state contract with Community Education Centers who operates the MinSec pre-release correctional facility will end on June 30th.

 

Counterfeit Money

If you live in Luzerne County... you're finding more and more businesses not accepting $50 and $100 dollar bills. The reason... they've been handed counterfeit bills circulating across northeast Pennsylvania. Some of the funny money... according to the Luzerne County District Attorney's office... is being circulated in the Back Mountain area around Dallas.

 

Boil Water Advisory

A boil water advisory remains in effect in one part of Luzerne County after a tractor – trailer backed into a fire hydrant at the corner of West Shawnee Avenue and Nottingham Street in Plymouth over the weekend. The broken hydrant shot water into the air... and lowered pressure to an estimated 6,700 hundred water subscribers. That means that customers from Plymouth to Edwardsville must bring their water to a rolling boil before using it.

Girls HS Softball

In girls high school softball Monday, in a Class A first round state playoff game...Williams Valley defeated Bloomsburg 8 to 0.

 

PHL Phillies

Monday night in major league baseball... The Philadelphia Phillies downed the Miami Marlins 7 to 2 at Citizens Bank Park. Both teams meet up in the second game of that series Tuesday night. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30.

 

MLB Other

In other games Monday night... the Atlanta Braves blasted the Pittsburgh Pirates 7 to 2 and the New York Yankees downing the Cleveland Indians 7 to 4.

 

NBA

In game 7 of the NBA's Eastern Conference final series... the Miami Heat defeated the Indiana Pacers 99 to 76.

 

NHL

In the second game of the National Hockey League's Eastern Conference final series... the Boston Bruins iced the Pittsburgh Penguins 6 to 1. The Bruins now lead the series two games to none.
