Bloomsburg Politics

The dust is still settling from this week's primary election in Columbia County... in particular... the race for the Democratic nomination for mayor of Bloomsburg. Political newcomer Sandy Davis unofficially received 49% of the vote over town councilpersons Eric Bower and Diane Levan. Those unofficial results show Eric Bower receiving 30% of the vote... with Diane Levan getting 20%.


Henry Hynoski

An MRI is scheduled for former Southern Columbia football player... and now New York Giants fullback Henry Hynoski. The third – year player collapsed to the ground with an apparent leg injury on the second play during Wednesday's drill in East Rutherford, New Jersey. After going down... Hynoski was carted off the field to be evaluated.


Click It or Ticket It

Police officers around the region are working with PennDOT... participating in a national “Click it or Ticket” program. In essence... a national seat – belt enforcement effort which runs through June 9th. Sgt. Roger Van Loan of the Bloomsburg Police Department tells us officers will be looking for drivers violating traffic laws... then as a secondary offense... not wearing a seat belt. The program's first big enforcement period begins Friday as drivers head out on the first holiday trip of the summer during the Memorial Day weekend.


Coal Twp. Fire

Shamokin area firemen spent the overnight hours on the scene of a house fire in Coal Township. Firemen were dispatched to 1237 West Arch Street when flames were seen coming from the building. A second alarm was sounded when the blaze came through the roof of the structure. Investigators will now try and find out what started that blaze Thursday morning in Coal Township.


Milton Gas Leak

A problem in Milton Wednesday... and it dealt with natural gas. At least two dozen home were evacuated after a construction crew hit a natural gas line near the intersection of Carr and Academy Avenue... causing the leak. UGI employees responded... and had the line fixed in short order... with folks being allowed to return to their homes.


HS Drug Charges

Three Crestwood students... near Mountain Top... were busted on drug charges after police alleged the trio tried to sell the drug Ritalin to other high school students. Derek Hudzik of Wapwallopen... as well as Desiree Newton and Annaliesa Daubenhauser... both of White Haven... are facing a long list of charges. Following arraignment... all were released on their own recognizance.


Bear Creek Crash

State Police continue to investigate a deadly crash in Bear Creek Township... near Wilkes – Barre... Killing two people. Police say 26 – year old Ryan Jacobson of Glen Richey was attempting to set up traffic control barricades on Route 115... when a car driven by 72 – year old Ann Rinko of Wilkes – Barre slammed into him. Both died at the scene.


American Eagle

Good economic news for Luzerne County. Governor Corbett announcing that American Eagle Outfitters will invest 160 – million dollars to construct a new direct – to – consumer distribution center at the Humbolt Industrial Park in Hazel Township. That... according to the governor... should pave the way to create 369 new jobs.


Sandusky Costs

Penn State’s costs for legal fees, consultants and other services connected to the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal have topped $44.4 million dollars. That word from the University. The total was through the end of February. It’s up about $1 and a half million dollars from the previous bill released through the end of January.

HS Softball

In girls high school softball yesterday, in a District 2 Class AAA quarterfinal playoff game... Berwick defeated Crestwood. 4 – 2.


Upcoming Softball

Three area softball teams play District 4 playoff games Thursday afternoon. In Class A, Benton plays at Bloomsburg. In Class AA, Central Columbia is at home against Troy... and in Class AAA Danville is at Jersey Shore.


PHL Phillies

In the final game of their three game set in Miami last night... the Philadelphia Phillies blanked the Miami Marlins 3 to nothing. The Phils have Thursday off. They will open a weekend series Friday against the Nationals in Washington.


Other MLB Games

In other games Thursday in the majors, the Cincinnati Reds completed a three game sweep of the New York Mets with a 7-4 win. In other action... The Baltimore Orioles downed the New York Yankees 6 to 3... and the Pittsburgh Pirates squeaked by the Chicago Cubs 1 to nothing.



In the opening game of the NBA's Eastern Conference final series... the Miami Heat just getting by the Indiana Pacers 103 to 102.



In the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs Wednesday night... Pittsburgh skated to a 7 to 3 win over the Ottawa Senators. The Penguins now lead the series 3 games to one.
