Berwick Dumpster Day

Berwick is doing it's part to either get rid of old, unused and unwanted items. The borough is holding a dumpster day Saturday at Test Track Park off of Eaton Street. Curt Rider is Berwick's Code Enforcement officer says most items can be dumped for free. However, Rider says no hazardous materials will be accepted... and there will be a $15 fee for each item with Freon... and a $2 charge for every tire dropped off. Dumpster day begins at 8 O'clock in Berwick.


Griffith to be Charged

Charges are expected to be filed Friday against Luzerne County Controller Walter Griffith, Junior. Authorities say Griffith will be charged with illegally recording conversations with people he spoke to without their okay. It's a third degree felony for taping someone without their consent... punishable to up to seven years in prison.


DUI Checkpoints

If you're out driving tonight... you may run into some DUI traffic checkpoints established by local lawmen. It's all part of the Pottsville – based North Central Highway Safety Network's Regional DUI Enforcement group. Although particular spots for the checkpoints aren't announced... in the past they've been along some of the busiest highways in the region... such as Route 11 and 487 in Columbia County... as well as Route 54 near Danville.


Sportsman's Expo

Getting people out and knowing what's in their community.....was the object of Thursday night's mini Sportsman's Expo at the Montour DeLong Fairgrounds near Washingtonville. The event was sponsored by State Representatives Kurt Masser of Elysburg... and his colleague Lynda Culver of Sunbury. Representatives from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission... the PA Game Commission... as well as the National Wild Turkey Federation were on hand for the event.


Artist Reception

State Representative David Millard Thursday night honored three Millville area men for their contributions to the arts. The works of Bill Whitmoyer... Bob Doucette and Mark Golomb will be on display at Representative Millard's Bloomsburg office the next few weeks. Mr. Millard says the projects show a lot of creativity. He went on to say... thinking out of the box will expand their horizons in whatever job they're doing.



This is the last weekend for the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble's latest production... entitled “Superior Donuts.” The story is based on an aging hippy who owns a donut shop in Chicago in 2010. Performances take place at the Alvina Krause Theater in Bloomsburg Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30.... with a Sunday Matinee at 3 O'clock.


Beaver Meadows Arrest

A Beaver Meadows man is in trouble with the law. Dean Kancir was arrested after he allegedly hit... and then dragged Beaver Meadows Police Chief Michael Morresi on Thursday. The chief was trying to serve a warrant on Kancir at his house on Berwick Street when the incident occurred. Kancir was later taken into custody and is now in the Carbon County Jail.


Hazleton Training Exercise

Don't be alarmed if you see a lot of first responders Friday at the Hazleton Elementary / Middle School at 9th and Wyoming Streets. It's all part of an active school shooter training exercise. It's designed to learn new skills by police, fire and emergency medical workers... and to strengthen procedures they already use.


Kingston Robbery

Kingston Police are still looking for a man who held up a Sunoco convenience store this week. Police say a man with a knife strolled into the store... demanded cash... then ran off with the money. It's not known how much was taken.


WHLM Sports


HS Baseball

In high school baseball Thursday... Central Columbia split a double header with Shamokin. In the first game Central came out on top 9 – 6... while the Indians came back in the second game.. defeating the Blue Jays 8 – 7.


HS Softball

In girls softball Thursday... Central Columbia defeated Bloomsburg 13-5 in the regular season finale for both teams


In other softball results...

Benton downed Bucktail Area 3 – 1... and Columbia Montour Vo – Tech swept a double headed from St. John Neuman. Tech blanking Neuman 16 to nothing in the first game.. and 13 to 1 in the second.


PHL Phillies

The Phillies had Thursday night off. Friday night... the Phils open a home weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30.


MLB / Other Games

In games played Thursday... the New York Mets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 5 – 2... the Pittsburgh Pirates downed the Milwaukee Brewers 7 – 1... and the Seattle Mariners barley getting by the New York Yankees 3 – 2...



In the NBA playoffs Thursday night... the New York Knicks out scored the Indiana Pacers 85 – 75. Despite the loss. Indiana lead the best of 7 series 3 games to two. San Antonio defeated Golden State 94 to 82. The Spurs now advance to the western finals.



In the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Friday night... the Pittsburgh Penguins are at home against Ottawa. The Pens lead that series one game to none.
