Primary Elections

If your still holding on to an absentee ballot for next Tuesday's primary... you have until the close of business Friday to get it into your respective election office. In Columbia County... Chief Registrar Matt Repasky says business has been a bit slow. As a matter of fact.. the request for absentee ballots is off 30% over 2009. If you're holding on to a absentee ballot... you have until 5 PM Friday to get it into Rapasky's office. The primary takes place Tuesday.

 

Voter ID

We're all getting ready for next Tuesday's primary election across the state. In Columbia and Montour Counties... there are races of local interest such as the Berwick School Board and the Bloomsburg Democratic primary for Mayor. That brings us to another point... Voter ID. Ron Ruman with the PA Department of State says voters will be asked but not required to show their IDs when casting ballots Tuesday. A court case is scheduled for July to decide whether the state's new law requiring ID to vote will be fully implemented

 

Berwick River Rescue

Two Berwick men... and an eight year old girl were rescued from the Susquehanna River Wednesday night after their boat got hung up in the rocks near the Berwick – Nescopeck Bridge. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition... Rick and Robert Dement... and as well as Robert's daughter got caught on the rocks while fishing. They were plucked from the water by the Berwick Fire Department's rescue boat.. and reached dry land at the test track boat dock. No one was injured

 

Nutritional Program

The Columbia – Montour Aging Office is taking part in a program designed to stretch your dollars when you visit a farmer's market. Agency Director Kathy Lynn says the Senior Farmers Market Nutritional program has been a main stay for folks sixty and older for the past few years. Ms. Lynn says not only do folks have to meet the age requirement... but an income threshold as well. For more information... give Kathy Lynn a call at her office on Sawmill Road.

 

Crestwood Threats

A Crestwood High School student in Mountain Top.. in Luzerne County... is free on bail after he was charged with making bomb and ricin threats at the school... forcing several evacuations. 18 – year old Richard Seiwell... a senior... is accused of writing threats on restroom walls at the school. As he entered a magistrate's office in Wright Township... Seiwell denied the charges.

 

Bank Robber Charged

A Wilkes – Barre man is facing charges after indictments were handed down in Scranton federal court. 45 – year old Kirk Robinson is accused of holding up two jewelry stores in May of 2008... and being involved in a bank robbery in 2010. Robinson is scheduled to appear in federal court next week to face the charges.

 

Copper Pipe Theft

There is a thief on the loose who stole copper piping from a Hazleton home. Police say the person somehow got into the basement of the North Laurel Street home this week... taking up to 40 of the pipe. Right now... cops are looking for a man... 6 feet tall with red hair... and may be carrying a black bag.

 

Leader Funeral

A funeral service will be held Thursday morning for former Pennsylvania Governor George Leader in Hershey. Leader died last week at the age of 95. He served as governor from 1955 – to 1959. The service takes place at the Derry Presbyterian Church in Hershey starting at 10:30.

 

Education Secretary

As expected.... Governor Corbett has announced the resignation of Ronald Tomalis as State Secretary of Education. He'll now become Special Adviser to the Governor on Higher Education. Meantime, the governor will nominate Dr. William Harner... the superintendent of the Cumberland Valley School District to be education secretary. Harner's nomination will need to be confirmed by the state Senate.

HS Baseball

In high school baseball Wednesday... Columbia Montour Vo Tech defeated Millville 12 – 2.... Southern Columbia downed Mount Carmel 10 – 5... and it was Bloomsburg over Saint John Neuman 6 – 1.

 

HS Softball

In girls softball... Columbia Montour Vo Tech blanked Millville 24 to nothing.

 

PHL Phillies

The Cleveland Indians roughed up Cole Hamels Wednesday and beat the Phillies 10-4. The Phils have Thursday off. On Friday... they open a weekend home series against Cincinnati.

 

MLB Games

In other games Wednesday... the Pittsburgh Pirates got by the Milwaukee Brewers 3 to 1... the St. Louis Cardinals downed the New York Mets 4 – 2... and the Seattle Mariners defeated the New York Yankees 12 – 2.

 

NBA

In the NBA playoffs Wednesday night... Miami got by Chicago 94 – 91... thus clinching the series.... and Memphis downed Oklahoma City 88 – 84.... with Memphis taking the series.
