Board Vacancies

The “Help Wanted” sign is out at Bloomsburg town hall. Town government is trying to fill some volunteer spots on the various boards that town council relies upon when it comes to recommendations on the decisions they make. Mayor Dan Knorr says one is on the Historic Architectural Review Board. Also needed... according to Mayor Knorr... is an alternate Zoning Board member... as well as the filling several openings on the Code Appeals Board. Interested... contact Amy Seamans at Town Hall.

 

Parking Study

There will soon be a parking survey undertaken aimed at downtown Bloomsburg by the University Foundation. Bloomsburg Council Vice – Chair Diane Levan says it will be a comprehensive look at the ebb and flow of cars and people. The forthcoming survey follows an announcement a few weeks ago of a million dollar gift earmarked to be moving the BU Foundation offices to the former Cole's Hardware store on East Main Street in 2014. The research to be conducted by students... and teaching assistants.

 

Kidsburg Help

The folks organizing the proposed rebuilding of Kidsburg in Bloomsburg Town Park has come to town council for possible in – kind help. Deb Huckens says her group may need some assistance when it comes to construction of handicapped – accessible walkways. One of which leads to the restroom area. No formal request has been submitted... just a heads up from the Kidsburg organization.

 

South Centre Twp. Fatal

A Danville man is dead... following a one car accident we initially told you about Tuesday morning in South Centre Township... on Route 11 near Hillside Drive. Authorities say 34 – year old Jason Snyder's car went off Route 11... and slammed into a stand of trees. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Wednesday's edition Snyder was apparently on his way home from his second shift assembly job at Deluxe Building Systems in Berwick. He died at the scene of blunt force trauma.

 

Pottsville Fire

Authorities in Pottsville now say a wood burning stove was NOT the cause of a fire late Sunday night which killed four children and two adults. Although the fire is not suspicious in nature... there is still no cause. That word coming after a fire investigator scoured the remains of the three story building in the 200 block of Pierce Street. Also... there were no smoke alarms in the building. 30 – year old Eric Brown... his four children and his sister – in – law died in the blaze.

 

Nanticoke Fire

A state police fire marshal is expected to be in Nanticoke Wednesday... trying to figure out what caused a blaze in a house in the 100 block of West Broad Street. No one was at home where flames were spotted coming from the attic area. Two dogs were rescued, but the family of four is homeless. One firefighter was slightly injured battling the Tuesday morning blaze in Nanticoke.

 

Fencing Found

A Nanticoke man is in the Luzerne County Correctional facility after he was charged with stealing the fencing surrounding the Newport Center Cemetery. 27 – year old Scott Wylie telling police he used the fence to get money to buy drugs. Wylie is facing a long list of charges after he allegedly stole an estimated 500 feet of fencing... fence posts... top rail and two gates. Police say the fence material was found at ABC Auto Parts in Hunlock Creek.

 

Alleged Mugger

A Wilkes – Barre man is in jail after he allegedly mugged another man. Cops are investigating assault and robbery which happened Monday afternoon. Investigators say the man attacked another person stealing his cell phone. The suspect was later found in a home on Barney Street.

 

Fire Follow Up

That house fire in the Newberry section of Williamsport we told you about last week has been ruled an arson. Authorities say someone set the fire early last week. Williamsport police say they have no suspects.

BU Softball

Three Bloomsburg University softball players have been named All Region. Named first team all Atlantic Region by the National Fast pitch Coaches Association were Kate Pain and Chrissy Belko. Mandi Baer was named second team All Region.

 

HS Baseball

In high school baseball Tuesday... Benton downed Millville 7 – 4.

 

HS Softball

In girls HS softball... South Williamsport defeated Benton 13 – 2.

 

Philadelphia Phillies

In major league baseball... the Philadelphia Phillies topped the Cleveland Indians 6 to 2 Tuesday night. The second and final game of that series will be played Wednesday afternoon. Catch all the action starting with the pre – game show at 12:30 on the WHLM Stations.

 

Other MLB Games

In other games Tuesday night... the Pittsburgh Pirates getting by the Milwaukee Brewers 4 – 3.... It was the St. Louis Cardinals over the New York Mets 10 – 4... and the New York Yankees squeaking by the Seattle Mariners 4 to 3.

 

NBA

In the NBA playoffs... Indiana downed the New York Knicks 93 – 82. Indiana now leads the series 3 games to 1. It was San Antonio over Golden State 109 – 91. San Antonio now leads the series 3 games to 2.

 

NHL

In the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup playoffs... in the opening game of a second round series... the Pittsburgh Penguins skated by the Ottawa Senators 4 to 1.
