WHLM Employee Helps Extinguish Fire
Late Monday Morning a vehicle caught fire in the parking lot located off Iron Street behind the WHLM Studios location in Downtown Bloomsburg. Station Employee Larry Hopper heard the call come over the fire scanner, and immediately sprang into action. Using his quick thinking and the station's fire extinguisher he was able to stop the vehicle fire before it spread. The Bloomsburg Fire Department reported to the scene to make sure things were wrapped up.

Investigators are focusing on a wood burning stove as the possible cause of a late Sunday night fire in Pottsville which killed two adults and four children. That stove was in the kitchen on the second floor of the three story home in the 200 block of Pierce Street. Dead are 30 – year old Eric Brown... and his 26 – year old sister-in-law Christina Thomas... and Brown's four children ranging in age from 2 to 8.
All six sleeping in bedrooms on the third floor. Brown's wife and the mother of the kids was doing the laundry at a friends house across the street when the flames broke out.
Berwick's Week of Caring
What a way to start the week.... a group of employees from a printing company in Berwick... getting together to make the Berwick Area's United Way's “Week of Caring” get off to a successful start. Matt Getty's group worked St. Charles Park down to Canal Street.... saying he found a lot of trash. Mark Varner stressed... despite Berwick's recent well – documented problems... it's a pretty good place to live. Other groups get a chance to spiff – up parks in Berwick on Tuesday such as the PPL H-R Department working on the wall at Columbia Avenue and Mulberry Street... First Keystone Community Bank working a few hours in Nescopeck Township Park... and various church groups spending part of their day at Briar Creek Park.
Central Wellness Center
Ground was officially broken late Monday afternoon for a new health and fitness complex at the Central Columbia High School. Superintendent Harry Mathias says $1.1 million dollars in pledges and corporate donations helps tremendously. Meantime... the most immediate and ambitious project is replacing the natural grass with artificial turf. That work begins Wednesday and will be wrapped by August 16th.
Hazleton Silk Mill
The owners of the former Duplan Silk Mill on Fulton Court in Hazleton have hired an engineer to examine a concrete rail that began breaking apart and falling to the ground over the weekend. The building is owned by a firm in Jermyn and thus far... have been cooperating with city officials. Fulton Court was closed for part of Monday... between Arbutus Street and East Diamond Avenue... but businesses were allowed to be open.
That free health clinic in Hazleton has had it's opening postponed. The clinic was to have opened Thursday afternoon.... serving folks who have no insurance. No word when the clinic at the Catholic Social Services Family Center on Church Street will open.
The average price of self – serve, unleaded gas is creeping up a bit across northeastern Pennsylvania. The latest Triple – A Fuel Gauge report shows gasoline retailing at an average of $3.42 a gallon. More in some locations... less at other. That's the same as the weekend... and up three cents from a week ago... but down nine cents a gallon over last month at this time.
In high school baseball Monday... Bloomsburg defeated Central Columbia 2 to nothing... Columbia Montour Vo – Tech blanked Benton 10 to nothing... and Berwick wrapped up the Wyoming Valley Conference title by getting by Hazleton 6-4.
Girls HS Softball
Southern Columbia defeated Shamokin 11 – 3... it was Berwick over Wyoming Area 14 – 2... Columbia Montour Vo - Tech downs Benton 7 – 2... and Weatherly topped Millville 17 – 3.
The Phillies return home tonight to play the Cleveland Indians. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30. On Monday, the Indians split a makeup doubleheader with the Yankees, winning the first game 1-0 and losing the nightcap 7-0.
In other games, it was... the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Mets 6 – 3.... and the Milwaukee Brewers downed the Pittsburgh Pirates 5 – 1.
Monday night, in the NBA playoffs.... Miami downed the Chicago 88 – 65... allowing the Heat to lead the series 3 games to one... and Memphis got the best of Oklahoma City 103 – 97. The victory gives Memphis a three to one lead in the series.
