Steam Electric

Unit 1 at the PPL Susquehanna nuclear power plant... in Salem Township north of Berwick... is off line. That happened early Thursday at the start of a scheduled outage to modify the turbines. The modifications are the first phase of a long-term plan that is expected to resolve the turbine blade issues that have affected plant operations in recent years. Meantime... Unit 2 remains off line as workers continue to modify the blade during it's regularly scheduled refueling outage. Both units are expected back in service by the start of summer.

 

Flood Proofing Workshop

We all know about flooding and it's effects. We're still recovering from the floods of 2011... and Thursday night... representatives from various state and federal agencies were in Bloomsburg to present a flood proofing workshop... all designed to lessen water damage. Those attending were shown elevating buildings in the flood plane... wet and dry flood proofing... as well as relocation and acquisition.

 

Food Drive

Letter carriers who work out of the Bloomsburg Post Office will be collecting non – perishable items when they walk their routes on Saturday. The food drive by the National Association of Letter Carriers is in it's 21st year... and Post Master Theresa Munson says the items collected stay in our area and go to the local food cupboard. Ms. Munson says all you have to do... is leave non – perishable items in a bag close to your mail box... and it will be picked up Saturday by either the letter carrier... or an assistant.

 

BTE Production

It's called “Superior Donuts” and it's the current production of the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble at the Alvina Krause Theatre on Center Street. Appearing on the Thursday edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz... the BTE's James Goode says the play takes place in Chicago in 2010.... when an aging hippy opens a donut shop. Performances run through May 19th on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30... and a Sunday matinee at 3 PM.

 

Tanker Wreck

One of the main north – south interstate highways through Pennsylvania is shut down in both directions causing major traffic headaches. A tanker fire early Thursday morning caused extensive damage to bridges at the I-81... and the route 22/322 interchange just west of Harrisburg. State transportation secretary Barry Schoch says the damaged overpasses which carries 22 / 322 will have to be removed. There were no injuries when the tanker with 7,500 gallons of diesel fuel overturned and caught fire.The Interstate is expected to be shut down through either Sunday or Monday.

 

Truck Stop Traffic

Sugarloaf Township Supervisors are trying to eliminate traffic congestion around the Pilot Truck Stop on Route 93 and Interstate 80. They've received a draft ordnance prohibiting stopping... standing or parking along Route 93 and an adjacent township road. Earlier this week... police were called to the truck stop to straighten out snarled traffic.

 

Kiddie Porn Charges

A Tamaqua man charged with sexually abusing a young girl 12 – years ago has waived his right to a preliminary hearing. 45 – year old Robert Raeder had the two felony counts of sexual abuse of children withdrawn by prosecutors. That clears the way for prosecution on federal child pornography charges.

 

George Leader

Flags across Pennsylvania are at half – staff in memory of former Governor George Leader. He died Thursday at a nursing home facility in Hershey. Mr. Leader was one of the commonwealth's youngest governors... taking office in 1955 at the age of 37. In his life after politics... Mr. Leader founded a chain of retirement communities. Former Governor George Leader... dead at the age of 95.

 

Hepatitis C
The CDC says more Americans need to be fully tested for Hepatitis C. The health care organization estimates that only half of Americans with Hepatitis C have been fully tested for the virus and that means many are not getting the needed care that could help them prevent life threatening liver diseases. Most of the affected people are Baby Boomers born between the years 1945 and 65. Officials say people who get a positive screening need follow up testing.

 

Shultz Funeral

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon for a well – known Benton man killed in a crash last week in the near the Pennsylvania – Delaware state line. 72 – year old Phillip Shultz died when his car was struck by a Jeep. His wife... Susan... a one time Benton Borough Councilwoman and secretary was critically injured. Friday's service will take place at 2 O'clock at the Dean Kriner Funeral home in Benton.

BU Softball

Bloomsburg University senior softball player Kate Pain has been named the PSAC Central Division Pitcher of the Year for the second straight season. Pain will lead the Huskies into the NCAA Region 2 tournament at Shippensburg University. The Huskies play Shippensburg Friday.

 

HS Baseball 

In high school baseball yesterday... Southern Columbia downed Benton 11 – 2... and Coughlin defeated Berwick 12 – 2.

 

Girls HS Softball

In girls high school softball from Thursday... South Williamsport just got by Central Columbia 8 – 7... Berwick blanked Tunkhannock 3 – nothing... It was Southern Columbia over Montoursville 12 – 1... Sullivan County defeated Millville 15 to nothing... and Bloomsburg got the best of Muncy 6 – 2.

 

Phillies

In the first game of a four game series in Arizona last night... The Arizona Diamondbacks out – scored the Philadelphia Phillies 2 to 1. Game two of the Phillies – Diamondbacks series takes place Friday night. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 9:05.

 

Other MLB Games

In other results from Thursday.... the New York Yankees getting by the Colorado Rockies 3 to 1... and the New York Mets downed the Pittsburgh Pirates 3 – 2.

 

NBA

There are two conference semifinal games Friday night in the NBA... Miami plays at Chicago... and San Antonio takes on Golden State. Both of those series are tied at one game each.

 

NHL Playoffs

In the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Thursday night.... Pittsburgh blanked the New York Islanders 4 to nothing... an thus take a 3 to 2 lead in their series.
