There is a new Diocesan Administrator in place... taking over the duties of the late Bishop Joseph McFadden who died last week. Father Robert Gillelean will lead the Diocese in it's day to day duties such as celebrate confirmations. Father Gillelean will remain in the position until a new Bishop is named by Pope Francis... and that could take up to a year.
We're about in the middle of that 5 – year, $50 – million project designed to rehabilitate the two bridges taking Interstate 80 over the Susquehanna River near Mifflinville. PennDOT's Rick Mason says a new bridge constructed is handling traffic... and now work is on – going on the eastbound span. And later this week... crews are expected to install beams on the closed, eastbound bridge. The project is expected to be wrapped in 2016.
Berwick United Way
It's the last day for groups to sign up for the Berwick Area United Way's “One Week of Caring.” The United Way's Ginny Crake says the week long effort replaced the one day event held in past years. Ms. Crake says this year volunteers will target the clean – up of parks in the greater Berwick area. Ms. Crake says volunteers are also needed to spiff – up non – profits which may need some help. Police in West Hazleton are trying to figure out who beat a man in his 20's over the weekend. The unidentified man was found in the area of Monroe Avenue and Rose Street early Saturday morning. His face was cut... he had no wallet... and his cell phone was destroyed. He was treated at Hazleton General Hospital... and is now recovering at his home. If you have information about the assault... call West Hazleton police.
An Iraqi war veteran has pleaded guilty to holding a Berwick couple hostage... after breaking into their Briar Creek Township home nearly two years ago. 29 – year old Harrison Karns of Mifflinville broke into the home and held the couple at gunpoint in December of 2011. Sentencing will be held at a later date... but Karns could get up to 50 years in state prison.
Child Sex Case
A Berwick woman could spend the next 14 – years in prison after admitting to being involved in child sex crimes. Christina Allen pleaded guilty in Columbia County court to indecent assault. Authorities say Allen forced a young boy and girl have sex acts with each other two years ago at a Berwick home. Also charged was Allen's boyfriend Daniel Galindo. He was found not guilty during a trial held last year.
NEPA Gas Prices
Gas prices across northeastern Pennsylvania have dropped and stabilized over the past few days. The latest Triple A fuel gauge report show we're now paying an average of $3.39 for self – serve, unleaded regular across the region... including Columbia and Montour Counties. Over the past month... gas has dropped 20 cents a gallon.
There is a person holding a Cash 5 ticket from Sunday... worth an estimated 225 – thousand dollars. Lottery officials says that ticket was purchased at Masser's Farm Market near Paxinos. The ticket matches all five numbers drawn. The winning ticket must be confirmed by lottery officials before any money is paid.
For the 31st consecutive season, a Bloomsburg University softball team has qualified for the NCAA tournament. The Huskies will be seeded 7th in the Atlantic Regional 2 which will be held this Friday through Sunday in Shippensburg.
The Bloomsburg University football team will be featured in a nationally televised home game this season for the first time in school history. On Thursday night, October 31st, the Huskies will play Shippensburg on the CBS Sports Network.
