McFadden Death

He died of a heart attack. That word from the Diocese of Harrisburg over the weekend as the cause of death of Bishop Joseph McFadden. Bishop McFadden died last Thursday as he prepared for a semi – annual meeting for Bishops in Philadelphia. Now... funeral services are scheduled for Bishop McFadden Wednesday in Harrisburg.


Budget / Dan Meuser

State Revenue Secretary Dan Meuser continues to spread the word of the governor's proposed $28 – billion dollar budget... now being hammered out by state lawmakers in Harrisburg. During a recent interview in Berwick.... Secretary Meuser says the governor's proposal calls for a balanced budget.... including pension reform... which, he says, the legislature and the people of the commonwealth need to get behind. However... late last week the state's Independent Fiscal Officer says a $230 – million dollar end of year surplus is not going to materialize... and based on calculations... that will put a $500 – million dollar hole in next year's budget.


Elks / Vets

Helping vets who served our country. Elks Lodge #436 of Bloomsburg did that over the weekend... inviting former servicemen who are guests at the Wilkes – Barre V-A facility for a day of fishing at the Orangeville Sportsman Club. Elks member Ken Weaver says the angling was good with the vets catching and releasing trout, bass and other species found in the Club's pond.


Nifty After 50

The Columbia – Montour Office on Aging will be at the Columbia Mall on Wednesday. On tap... the 23rd annual Nifty After 50 program. The agency's Kathy Lynn says there will be vendors on hand promoting their products... as well as plenty of activities to join in. Ms. Lynn says students from the Columbia – Montour Vo – Tech will be decorating cakes throughout the event to be given away. Wednesday's Nifty After 50 begins at 10 O'clock at the Columbia Mall in Buckhorn.


Disclosure Statements

A bill to require state and local officials to file their annual financial disclosure statements electronically has been introduced by Sen. Lisa Baker. It comes as the annual filing deadline for the disclosures arrived. The legislation would require the state Ethics Commission to create a more accessible format on its website to post these statements... providing information about income... investments and debts.


Fatal Crash

Police continue their investigation into a crash which killed a Nanticoke woman over the weekend. 39 – year old Cherri Hummel was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other people... 37 – year old James Novis of Nanticoke... 24 – year old Michael Romanoskey of Wilkes – Barre were treated and released at a hospital. Police say the high speed, one – car accident took place at State Route 29 and Trojan Road.


Tamaqua Fire Truck

A 1922 Seagrave fire truck which served Tamaqua nearly 40 – years is back home. The pumper was initially sold to a collector in Allentown... then another collector on Ocala, Florida... finally ended up in a Central Florida Museum. But after a deal was cut... the Tamaqua historical society purchased the piece... eventually costing nearly $8,000 to bring it home... now parked in a borough – owned garage.


I-80 Work

More roadwork on Interstate 80 to contend with this week... so says PennDOT. The agency's Rick Mason says starting Monday... a temporary concrete barrier placement and line paining operations will take place on the highway... eastbound... at the on and off ramps of Route 339 at the Mifflinville exit.  Mason says there will be a rolling roadblock on Thursday in order to slow traffic so new concrete beams can be set in the eastbound lane between the Berwick and Mifflinville interchanges. All work will be done during the daylight hours.


Atlas Fire

Investigators say an electrical problem sparked a blaze in an Atlas home over the weekend. The apartment building was at the corner of West Girard and Montgomery Streets. No one was injured.  It's the fourth time there's been a fire along West Girard in the past ten days. The other three are considered suspicious.

BU Football

The defense dominated the offense as the Bloomsburg University football team concluded spring drills with the Maroon & Gold game on Friday night. The Huskies open the season, Saturday afternoon, September 7 at home against Stonehill.


Phil / Miami

The Miami Marlins rocked Roy Halladay for 9 runs in 2 and a third innings and went on to beat the Phillies Sunday 14-2. Monday night the Phils begin a series in San Francisco. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 9:35.


Other MLB Games

In other games Sunday... the Washington Nationals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-2... the New York Yankees lost to Oakland 5-4, and the New York Mets lost to the Atlanta Braves 9-4.



In the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, Pittsburgh defeated the New York Islanders 5-4 in overtime to take a 2 to 1 series lead.



In the NBA playoffs, Oklahoma city got by Memphis 93-91 and Indiana downed New York 102-95.
