An Orangeville man is in the Columbia County Prison this morning... charged with aggravated assault for allegedly abusing two, 4 – year old girls who are twins. State Police at Bloomsburg say 25 – year old Brandon Kile is the live – in boyfriend of the girls' mother... 24 – year old Crystal Enck. The cuts and bruises on the toddlers was discovered by their biological father who took the twins to an emergency room last December. Kile was arraigned and was unable to post 75 – thousand dollars bail. Meantime, police continue to look into Enck's involvement in the abuse.
Northumberland County Fire
Flames tore through a two – story, double block home on West Girard Street near Mt. Carmel early Wednesday morning. The flames were discovered around 1:30... and it's believed they began in the basement of the vacant side of the building. The man living on the other side got out safely. One fireman was injured. He was sent to a local hospital after a hose blew out... treated in the ER and released.
We now know the name of the Benton area woman who died in a one car crash earlier this week. 65 – year old Sarah McMullen died when a car... driven by her husband... slammed into a tree on Monday. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Wednesday's edition... the '97 Saturn they were in drifted off the Old Tioga Turnpike. Both were trapped in the car until freed by fire fighters. Mrs. McMullen was pronounced dead at a Wilkes – Barre Hospital... while her husband.. Dennis... is in fair condition at Geisinger in Danville.
Bloomsburg Pet & Toy Parade
It's been around for the past 46 – years.... and late Wednesday afternoon the 47th edition will march south on Market Street. The annual Kiwanis Pet and Toy Parade kicks off the 2013 version of the Bloomsburg Fireman's Carnival. Parade chairperson Marianne Kreisher says the event forms at 5:30 in the parking lots behind the Columbia County Courthouse... and will step off at 6 O'clock. Ms. Kreisher says there will be prizes handed out at the fire hall at the conclusion of the parade. The Catawissa Military Band... as well as the Bloomsburg High School Band will be in the route of march.
A West Hazleton man has been arrested following a traffic stop. That's when State Police discovered 500 baggies of heroin and three bags of crack cocain in a car driven by 25 – year old Nelson Soto of West Branch Street. A long list of drug related charges were filed. Soto was arraigned... and unable to post bail... was hustled off to the Luzerne County Prison.
A Nesquehoning man is in trouble with the law. 48 – year old Anthony Mistretta is charged with three counts of invasion of privacy. Mistretta is charged with using a mirror over a stall to allegedly watch people using the restroom at a Wal – Mart in Lehighton over the weekend. All the charges are misdemeanors.
Unemployment in northeastern Pennsylvania stood at 9.6% in March. It's the 36th consecutive month in which unemployment was the highest in the state's 14 metro areas. The State Bureau of Labor and Industry says State College had the state's lowest unemployment rate of 5.6%.
Montour Bridge Replacement
PennDOT crews will begin a bridge replacement project Wednesday on Diehl Road in Montour County's Derry Township. Agency spokesman Rick Mason.... says the bridge over Mud Creek was originally built back in 1934... and is due for replacement. The PennDOT crew will demolish the bridge... with a contractor coming in with a pre – cast box culvert. Mason says the job will take seven to eight weeks to complete and detours will be in place.
Welfare Department Nominee
Governor Corbett has nominated Beverly Mackereth as Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. She has been the acting chief for the past couple of months. The 55 – year old Mackereth will oversee the Department of Public Welfare, which employs approximately 16,000 workers and has a budget of more than $28 - billion in state and federal dollars. The department provides services and support to approximately 2.3 million citizens in Pennsylvania.

Randy Nosal with the Pennsylvania American Legion will be in the office of State Representative Lynda Culver. Nosal will assist with such items as compensation and pension claims... education benefits... and enrollment in the VA health care system. Culver's district office is at 106 North Arch Street in Sunbury.
A Union County woman... near Lewisburg... is in jail after she allegedly threatened to shoot several teens outside her home. 50 – year old Kaye Phleeger is facing assault charges after pointing a weapon at the teens... telling them she was going to pull the trigger. The kids telling police they were looking at a fallen tree when Phleeger threatened them.
Bloomsburg Athlete Signs
Bloomsburg High School senior Zack Mrozek, who scored over one thousand points in his high school basketball career, has decided to play his college basketball at Lebanon Valley College. Mrozek, whose father was the former head coach at Bloomsburg, will be joined by another former coaches' son. Travis Conrad, a senior at Lewisburg High School and the son of former Bloomsburg University coach Terry Conrad, is also headed to Lebanon Valley.
Girls HS Softball
In girls softball Tuesday.... Southern Columbia defeated Central Columbia 9 – 5... Bloomsburg downed Millville 25 to 1... it was Montgomery over Benton 4 -1... and Lourdes Regional defeated Columbia Montour Vo – Tech 10 – nothing.
In major league baseball Tuesday night... A rough start for the Philadelphia Phillies. They were defeated by the Cleveland Indians 14 to 2. Both teams meet again Wednesday night in Cleveland. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30.
Other MLB Games
In other games Tuesday night... the Milwaukee Brewers downed the Pittsburgh Pirates 12 to 8... the Miami Marlins got by the New York Mets 2 to 1... and it was the New York Yankees over the Houston Astros 7 to 4.
In NBA playoff action Tuesday night... Denver defeated Golden State 107 to 100... and Memphis out scored the LA Clippers 103 to 93.
