Block Party

Some good memories made during Block Party in Bloomsburg Saturday... other memories not so good as numerous arrests were made by police. The biggest category... 29 busted for underage drinking. The major problem area... according to Police Chief Leo Sokoloski... was along Fetterman Avenue... just off Lightstreet Road. That's when students and young people clashed with police who entered the area using the “Bearcat...” a rapid assault vehicle. The $362,000 dollar unit... mounted on a Ford F-650 chassis... is funded by Homeland Security dollars.

 

Sudents Party Hardy

Block Party's ground zero appeared to be on Fetterman Avenue... just off Lightstreet Road. One college – age student from Maryland said the scene was... as he described.... nuts.... telling us about the “Bearcat” entering Fetterman Avenue... and getting tear gassed. Hundreds... if not thousands of student converged on Block Party's hot spots... such as Iron and East Streets... as well as Lightstreet Road.

 

White Hall Twp. Fire

Investigators say a space heater was the cause of a fire which destroyed a double – wide home over the weekend... leaving seven people homeless. The blaze took place on in White Hall Township on Pleasant View Road... north of Lewisburg... Saturday night. All seven in the home escaped the flames.

 

Hazleton Fire

A state fire marshal is being called in to determine what started a blaze in a condemned double block home in the 5 – hundred block of McKinley Street that went up in flames early Sunday morning. The flames spread to four other homes before being extinguished. The structure is owned by an absentee landlord... and was divided into five apartments. But for the past decade the owners... past tenants and contractors... as well as Hazleton code enforcement have been at odds as to what to do with the building.

 

Voter Registration

If you plan to vote in next month's primary election... as well as the general election in November... Monday is the last day to sign up. The registration deadline is at the close of business... and Columbia County Chief Registrar Matt Rapasky says it's a pretty simple procedure. Mr. Repasky says if you stop in at the Courthouse Annex in Bloomsburg to register... you should have your voter registration card by the end of the week. This year's primary is May 21st.

 

Road to Recovery

There is a program run by the American Cancer Society... that needs a little help these days. It's the society's “Road to Recovery” program and is seeking volunteer drivers to take cancer patients to their hospital or doctor appointments so says says the society's Dawn Spuesens. Ms. Spuesens says drivers are needed in Columbia and Montour Counties due to the close proximity to the Geisinger Medical Center. For more information or to volunteer give the society a call.

 

Feral Cat Program

The borough of Conyngham is seeking donations to continue it's feral cat program. Last summer... a little more than two dozen cats were trapped neutered or spayed and released back into the community. The program was a success... and those involved want to make sure it continues. Donations can be dropped off at the borough building in the 200 block of Main Street.

 

Black Fly Program

The Luzerne County Council is expected to take up the issue of joining the State's black – fly program. Those black flies are those pesky gnats which hang around us during the summer months. County Manager Robert Lawton says Luzerne could save up to $70,000 to opt out, but several council members say they need to be included in the eradication program. The discussion is expected to surface during Tuesday's Council meeting in Wilkes – Barre.

BU Baseball

The Bloomsburg University baseball team lost a home doubleheader to East Stroudsburg Sunday afternoon. The Huskies lost the first game 3 to 1 and the nightcap 5 to 3. The teams will meet again in another doubleheader Monday afternoon at East Stroudsburg.

 

MLB

In the final game of a four game series Sunday night... the Philadelphia Phillies downed the St. Louis Cardinals 7 to 3. Monday night the Phils are at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:35. On Sunday... the Pirates defeated the Atlanta Braves 4-2. In other games Sunday, the Mets shut out the Nationals 2-0 and the Yankees lost to Toronto 8-4.

 

NBA

The NBA playoffs began over the weekend. In series openers Sunday... Indiana downed Atlanta 107 – 90... it was San Antonio over the Los Angeles Lakers 91 – 79... Miami defeated Milwaukee 110 to 87... and it was Oklahoma City over Houston 120 to 91.
