Head Coach Hired

There will be a new head Panther on the sidelines at this fall's Bloomsburg High School football games. Mike Kogut was hired as head football coach Tuesday night by the Bloomsburg school board on a vote of 5 to 3. He'll replace Larry Sones who resigned. Following the vote... Kogut telling WHLM News he's happy to be coaching the Panthers. Coach Kogut will commute between his day job as a teacher of gifted students in the Tri – Valley district in neighboring Schuylkill County.

 

Ex BU Students Sentenced

Two ex – Bloomsburg University students... who were also field hockey players... will be spending some time in jail after being sentenced in Columbia County Court Tuesday. 22 – year old Lauren McGinley of Wilkes – Barre could serve from 10 days to 12 months behind bars... while 21 – year old Nicole Bruce of Clifford could be jailed anywhere from three days to 12 months. The pair was convicted of simple assault earlier this year during a jury trial in the beating of 25 – year old Ashley Carsia during homecoming weekend back in 2011.

 

Demolition of a Landmark

It's been going on for weeks.... the demolition of the former Bloomsburg Mills yarn processing and weaving plant on West 6th Street. Crews knocking down the historic building... and all that's left are piles of stones being moved around the site and carted away. Developers Matt Zoppetti and his partner, Sante D'Ambrosio plan to eventually construct apartment buildings for those folks 50 – plus. The project given an okay recently by Bloomsburg Town Council.

 

PennDOT Work

A $644,000 safety improvement project along a section of Route 54 at Danville is set to start next week. A PennDOT spokesman says the improvements will extend the acceleration and turning lanes along Route 54 from just north of Montour Street to Route 11. The work will also include placing new drainage inlets, new concrete median and resurfacing of the existing roadway.

 

Children's Author

A children's author and illustrator will be making the rounds at libraries in Columbia and Montour Counties on Wednesday. Susan Bloom's latest book is entitled “The Bus for Us...” so says Lydia Kegler of the Columbia County Traveling Library. The tour begins at 10 AM Wednesday at the Bloomsburg Public Library... then will move on to the Thomas Beaver Library in Danville at 11... The McBride Public Library in Berwick at 3... with the last stop at the Orangeville Public Library at 4:30.

 

Burglar IDed

We now know who was shot as he allegedly burglarized a Hazleton home over the weekend. Police say 26 – year old Zachary Dangelo of Freeland was shot in the abdomen by the owner of a home on Hayes Street while the burglary was in progress. Dangelo is in stable condition. Police are continuing their investigation.

 

Hazleton Fire Probes

Authorities have ruled that a fire in West Hazleton Monday night... in the 200 block of North Third Street was deliberately set. The blaze began on the third floor of the vacant home. A state police fire marshal making the determination. Meantime... authorities say a second fire Monday night in the 100 block of Fulton Court in Hazleton has been ruled suspicious. The fire began in a second floor bedroom... the cause remains unknown.

 

Mt. Carmel Project

Ground is expected to be broken sometime this month on a flood control project in Mt. Carmel... in Northumberland County. Through the use of an estimated $13 – million dollars in grants... Shamokin Creek will become a bit deeper... and stone walls will be constructed in order to keep flood waters out of homes on Water Street. Officials say if we have heavy rains... Shamokin Creek quickly rises... flooding dozens of homes.

 

Drug Testing

A state lawmaker wants to make pre-employment drug screenings mandatory for teachers and others who work in schools. Criminal background and child abuse checks are already required for potential school employees. Representative Tony DeLuca says many private employers make applicants submit to drug screenings. The bill would apply to all prospective employees of public and private schools, intermediate units and area vocational technical schools.

Poor field conditions and cold temperatures forced the postponement of Tuesday's Bloomsburg University at Lock Haven baseball game. That game will be played Wednesday afternoon at Lock Haven starting at 3 o'clock.

 

HS BB / Boys

In high school baseball Tuesday... Bloomsburg down Southern Columbia 6 to 3... and Berwick defeated Wyoming Valley West 13 to 1.

 

MLB / Phillies

In major league baseball the Phillies play at Atlanta Wednesday. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:35.

 

NCAA Women's Games

In the NCAA women's basketball elite eight Tuesday night... Notre Dame downed Duke 87 – 76... and it was Louisville over Tennessee 86 – 78.
