Bloomsburg HS Football Coach Update

The Bloomsburg High School district is closer to hiriing a new head football coach.

Superintendent Cos Curry confirming to WHLM News... that a job offer has been extended to 37 – year old Mike Kogut of the Tri – Valley School District in Schuylkill County. Mr. Kogut has five years of head coaching experience at Tri – Valley which is similar in size to Bloomsburg. Tri – Valley's website lists Kogut as a teacher for gifted students at the district's Junior / Senior High School in Hegins.He faces Bloomsburg school board approval at next Tuesday's meeting.

 

United Way

The capital campaign of the United Way of Columbia County during 2012 was a huge success. It was announced Wednesday... an estimated $511,000 in cash or pledges came in during the three month long campaign. Executive Director John Thomas says the importance of the small, individual contributor... plays a big factor in the final total. Large business and industry... such as PPL... Weis Markets and Autoneum topped the list of corporate contributors in 2012.

 

Atlas Crash

A Luzerne County man was taken to the hospital for treatment after he lost control of his tri – axle dump truck near Mt. Carmel Wednesday. 44 – year old Ronald Dowd of Drums... destroyed his truck... two cars and damaged an auto parts store when he apparently missed a downshift while carrying coal dust near Atlas. Dowd suffered cuts and was taken to a hospital for a check up. The accident shutting down Route 61 for a couple of hours for an investigation..

 

Bloomsburg LL Fundraiser

A year ago... two Bloomsburg kids came through with a $2,000 donation to faith – based AGAPE.... now 9 – year old Arrick Beagle... and his 7 – year old brother, Alexander, want to the same thing for Bloomsburg Little League... especially following the floods of the fall of 2011. So the Beagle brothers plan called “Ball Four” at the Links in Buckhorn this July. Little Arrick Beagle says there is still a lot of work to do at the Town Park little league location since the flood. The fund raising event on July 13th will provide participants with mini – golf.. an obstacle course... as well as laser tag.

 

Lions Gate Blood Drive

A new location for a blood drive for the Bloomsburg chapter of the American Red Cross. It takes place Thursday afternoon in the community room at the Lions Gate complex in Scott Township. The chapter's Sue Norton hopes to get some new blood donors involved in the on – going program. Thursday's blood drive at Lions Gate begins at 1 O'clock and runs through late afternoon.

 

PA Horse Racing

An annual report that looks at the impact of Pennsylvania's casinos on the state's horse racing industry shows signs of continued growth. The amount of tax revenue generated by slots play for the Race Horse Development fund was down slightly, but the number of days with live racing was up slightly and there was a 12% increase in wagering on live racing. Doug Harbach of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board says the state is also seeing better and bigger breeding operations as a result of the Race Horse Development and Gaming Act.
 

Drug Bust

A Hazleton man is jailed after he was busted while allegedly possessing marijuana... heroin and a lot of cash. 26 – year old Adam Castro was a passenger in a van stopped by a Hazleton patrolman this week.  The officer stopped the van on Sixth Street.... and that's when Castro started running with a large shopping bag. He was caught a short time later and arrested.

 

Metal Detectors

The Hazleton Area school board has decided to install metal detection security at elementary and middle schools in the district. The board approving a deal to purchase 16 walk – though detectors for the district's eight middle and high schools for $78,000. The money coming from a recent tax settlement.

 

Ribbon Cutting

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Wednesday at the Geisinger – Bloomsburg Hospital. The event celebrated the newly – renovated emergency department... as well as Geisinger's newest Careworks Clinic. The clinic is open seven days a week... and provides treatment for medical issues that does not require an emergency room.

BU Lacrosse

The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team lost 5 to 2 at West Chester Wednesday afternoon in the Huskies PSAC opener. Bloomsburg will take a 2 and 4 record into Saturday afternoon's game at Mercyhurst.

 

NBA

The second longest winning streak in the history of the NBA came to end Wednesday night. The Chicago Bulls beat the Miami Heat 101-97 in Chicago. It ended the Heat's 27 game winning streak. In other NBA action Wednesday night... The Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 100 – 92.

 

NCAA

The NCAA men's basketball tournament resumes Thursday with four games. Wichita State plays Lasalle... Arizona goes against Ohio State... Indiana plays Syracuse... and Marquette faces Miami.
