We still don't know the identities of two people killed at midday Friday in a grinding two vehicle crash on Route 11... south of Danville in Point Township in Northumberland County. Our media partner Newswatch 16 is reporting the crash happened at Route 11 and Ridge Road when a southbound minivan crossed the center line and collided with a Ford Taurus. The driver of the van died.... while a passenger in the Ford was killed. The impact tossed the van on the North Shore Railroad tracks that border Route 11. The accident closed Route 11 for hours... but the highway is now reopened.
200 years ago... Columbia County wanted their independence... so they broke off from Northumberland County.... and Friday afternoon the moment was recreated in a courtroom of the Columbia County Courthouse in Bloomsburg. It kicked off this weekends Bicentennial celebration. Columbia and Montour County commissioners taking part in the event.... including actors from the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble. Current day lawmakers were on hand to deliver proclamations. The Bicentennial celebration continues Saturday with a big event at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds... as well as a 5K Run / Walk.... and a 70 unit parade which heads west on Main Street Saturday afternoon. The WHLM Stations will have live coverage of the County's Bicentennial parade starting at 2 O'clock.
A Republican plan to phase out Pennsylvania's 600 state-operated liquor stores passed the state House easily on Thursday and was sent to the state Senate.
The vote was 105 – 90. The sale of the stores would raise millions of dollars in revenue by selling licenses to private businesses. There was hours of debate leading up to last night's vote... including Democrats who warned thousands of state store workers would be left without jobs... and would cost more and generate less revenues than what supporters predict. No word when the Senate plans to take up the measure.
Berwick's west end was thrown into darkness overnight when a car collided with a utility poll at the corner of Route 93 and Freas Avenue. Luckily... no one was injured. The incident happened around midnight. According to reports from the scene... the car sheared off the poll about half – way up from it's base. PPL was called to replace the poll and get the juice back to people in the dark.
We were the first media outlet to tell you Thursday about the two break – in's during the early morning hours in Bloomsburg. The suspects being sought are still on the lam. Initially, the Bloomsburg YMCA on 7th Street was broken into. Game consoles and a large screen TV was taken. Moments later... the Fuel On Convenience Store was targeted. A window was smashed out. Now... police are looking at surveillance video from the store in the hope of identifying the two wanted for questioning.
Faith – based AGAPE is accepting unused, but clean men's and women's clothing and shoes Friday at their headquarters on 7th Street in Bloomsburg. What they're looking for is casual clothing and business attire. Meantime... a second donation day is set up for Monday according to AGAPE's Kathy Lowe.
AGAPE plans to be open Tuesday... starting at 5 O'clock to distribute the clothing to those who are in need of the items.
Nanticoke / Newport Twp
That squabble between Nanticoke Community Ambulance and neighboring Newport Township has spilled over into Luzerne County Court. Nanticoke has filed a lawsuit... saying Newport Township owes an estimated $30,000 in reimbursements for paramedic services. Published reports say both sides have a contract calling for Nanticoke to be paid each time paramedics are used on calls in Newport Township. Nanticoke says it's suing for breach of contract and unjust enrichment.
He's already in federal custody on sex related charges... now convicted child pornographer Joseph Ostrowski was arraigned on a charge he allegedly molested a football player while coaching at Holy Redeemer High School in Wilkes – Barre. The 29 – year old Ostrowski had bail set at $50,000, but he's not going anywhere soon since he pleaded guilty to kiddie porn charges earlier this year. The latest incident happened between March and May of 2012.
If you use an state electronic benefit transfer card.... you won't be able to use them starting Saturday at 11 PM.... through noon Sunday. The temporary outage is needed because of changes in information technology due to switching card vendors. What it comes down to.... cardholders will not be able to make purchases with their card or access account information while the transfer is taking place.
The Bloomsburg University wrestling team advanced five of its six wrestlers to day two action at the 2013 NCAA Division I wrestling championships in Des Moines, Iowa. The Bloomsburg University softball team split a doubler - header with Catawba College yesterday in Salisbury, North Carolina. Both scores were one to nothing. The Huskies play Lafayette State this afternoon.
In the NCAA basketball tournament Thursday, Bucknell had a 6 point lead in the second half, but couldn't hold that lead in a 68-56 loss to Butler in Lexington, Kentucky. The Bison end the season with a school record 28 wins and 6 losses.
